Chapter 4

I don't know how long it took before I finally managed to escape, staggering all the way until I slammed open the door to the rooftop. A message arrived on my phone, it was from Chelsea. Chelsea: Thanks to you, I got to experience being a blood-play toy for once. This whole game was carefully designed by Mr. Larc. Did you enjoy it? Oh, and the video is very clear!" Every word on the screen pierced my eyes like needles. A sharp pain suddenly twisted in my lower abdomen. I instantly lost strength and slid down against the cold wall. How ironic. He wasn't just watching, this entire scene had been orchestrated by him from the very start. In my memories, there was once someone who would risk his life for me in a dark alley. Now, he had become someone who allowed others to completely destroy me with the most vile methods. Leaning against the icy wall, my whole body ached so intensely I was about to lose consciousness. Just when I was about to collapse, a lawyer from the Moore family suddenly called. "Margaux! Dylan's sister's death was never your sister's fault! On the contrary, your sister saved his sister back then. She got crushed by falling debris, that's why her spinal nerves were damaged, why she's been paralyzed all these years!" I froze for a few seconds, and then a tidal wave of absurdity and grief-fueled rage ripped through me, like it was tearing me apart from the inside out. I let out a harsh, hollow laugh. Then I couldn't hold it back any longer, hot blood burst from my throat and spilled out of my mouth. The deep thrum of helicopter rotors rumbled closer and closer, growing louder by the second. "Margaux! Stay with me!" A familiar, frantic voice shouted over the wind. "Eric...Moore…" My vision went black. I curled into myself, the sharp cold wind of the rooftop wrapping around me as I lost consciousness. Meanwhile, Dylan was waiting outside Chelsea's clinic room. The old housekeeper came stumbling toward him, his shoes slipping on the floor, and dropped to his knees with a hard thud right in front of Dylan. "Mr. Larc, since you've already arranged things for Mrs. Larc's sister, why didn't you tell her the truth? Please, I beg you, spare her!" Dylan had never seen the old butler lose his composure like this before. "Where is Margaux? She's supposed to be doing the skin graft matching, isn't she? Why hasn't she come down yet?" Irritation still clung to Dylan's face, but his voice tightened against his will, betraying him. "She's up in the operating room on the top floor. Please, Mr. Larc, hurry, go check…" Dylan's brow snapped into a deep frown. A strange, crippling panic he'd never felt before coiled tight in his chest. Before the old butler could even finish his sentence, Dylan was already sprinting out the door. Dylan kicked open the operating room door, and the sharp, coppery stench of blood hit him full in the face the second he burst in. There were no doctors, no nurses, none of the pre-op checks that had been arranged beforehand. All that was left was an empty, messy operating table. Big, dark patches of wet, still-fresh blood soaked every inch of the sheet. Dylan froze solid right where he stood, every drop of blood in his veins turned to ice in that single, horrible second, his heart even stopped mid-beat. "Margaux?" Dead silence answered him. He burst out of the operating room immediately, grabbing every person he passed in the hallway and demanding answers. "Where is my wife?! Has anyone seen Margaux?!" Everyone around him shrank back, terrified by his ferocious, wild-eyed look, and scrambled to shake their heads. He tore through every single corner of the floor searching for her, but there was no trace of her anywhere. He was spiraling into panic when a group of nurses wheeled gurneys covered by white sheets toward him, and his breath caught hard in his throat. Dylan lunged forward, ignoring the startled shrieks of the staff around him, and ripped back the white sheets one by one with shaking, unsteady hands. One unfamiliar face after another flashed before his eyes. The tension in his heart eased slightly, and he slid down against the wall to the floor. At that moment, his assistant came running toward him, face full of panic. "Mr. Larc! Mrs. Larc jumped… jumped from the rooftop!"
