UNRAVELING THREADS

1050 Words
The next morning Lira didn’t sleep well. She couldn’t remember a time when her mind had been more chaotic when her thoughts were spinning like a whirlwind, leaving her tangled in contradictions. She wanted to forget about Juno. She wanted to pretend that nothing had happened. That the way his breath felt on her skin and the way his words had pierced her thoughts weren’t real. But they were. And as she got dressed in her usual school uniform, she felt the same tension coil in her chest. I can’t go back there today. I won’t. She stared at herself in the mirror for a long moment, eyes red from lack of sleep, face pale. She couldn’t look like this. She couldn’t let anyone see how badly he had affected her. Lira pulled her hair into a neat ponytail, swiped a bit of makeup on, and forced herself to smile in the mirror, though it felt like a mask. When she walked out the door, she kept her head down. The last thing she wanted was to bump into him, to see the way he’d looked at her as she walked away from him last night. No. I’m not going to do this. Not again. At School It was impossible to ignore him. The second she stepped into school, she felt the air shift. It was like everyone was holding their breath. The whispers started as soon as she walked past the lockers. “Did you see? Lira Moonfire and Juno Falcon.” “Wait, are they a thing now?” “I heard he dropped her off last night. She was acting all strange.” Her stomach churned. She tried to ignore it, walking quickly to her locker, but the sensation of being watched was impossible to shake. They’re all looking at me. They’re all whispering about me. She could almost hear the words in their minds. The questions, the judgment. Was she really the girl who got tangled up with the bad boy? Was she the one who had fallen for the mysterious Juno Falcon? And why hadn’t she told anyone what had really happened? Because she couldn’t. She didn’t want to. There was too much power in it too much of her, too much of him. And the worst part was, she couldn’t seem to stop thinking about him. Lunch Hour Lira avoided the cafeteria. The idea of being around anyone else made her feel like she was suffocating. She needed space, solitude, a moment to think. But as she walked outside, she didn’t expect to see him again. Juno Falcon. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, eyes dark and intent, watching her every move. Her heart skipped a beat, and she stopped dead in her tracks. He didn’t look like he was going to make any move to approach her, but his presence was so overwhelming. She knew she should turn around. She knew she should walk away. But she couldn’t. Juno pushed off the wall slowly, closing the distance between them in a few long strides. “Still avoiding me, huh?” he asked, his voice just low enough that no one else could hear. Lira stiffened. “I’m not avoiding you,” she said, though she could feel the lie on her lips. “Yeah, you are.” She flinched as his gaze flickered to her lips, and then back to her eyes. It was like he was reading her, pulling everything out of her without even touching her. “Why are you here?” Lira asked, her tone harsher than she meant. “To see you.” Her heart skipped a beat again. “I told you,” she said quickly, stepping back, “I’m not ready.” “Ready for what?” he asked, leaning in so close she could feel the heat of his breath against her skin. “Ready to be with me? Ready to feel what I’m offering you? Or ready to admit that you want this just as much as I do?” Lira’s breath hitched. “No,” she whispered. “Lira,” Juno said, voice suddenly soft, teasing. “You’re lying again. And you don’t lie well.” The world seemed to stop for a moment. The bustling hallway, the distant voices of students everything faded away except for him. She took another step back, shaking her head. “I’m not lying.” “Then why are you still standing here?” Later That Day The rest of the school day passed in a blur. Lira barely heard anything her teachers said. She barely even saw anyone around her. It felt like everything every conversation, every look, every word was just background noise to the constant drum of Juno’s presence in her mind. She should’ve left. Should’ve gone home after the encounter outside. Should’ve stayed away from him, stayed away from all the chaos he brought into her life. But she didn’t. And that terrified her more than anything. After School She walked to her usual spot by the school gates, but before she could even think about crossing the street, she saw Juno’s car parked there exactly where she’d left it earlier that morning. Her pulse quickened. Not again. He wasn’t sitting in the driver’s seat this time. He was standing by the car, hands in his pockets, watching her with a look that she couldn’t quite place something between amusement and challenge. “Lira,” he said quietly when she came closer, “I told you, you can’t stay away from me forever.” She stopped in front of him, trying to gather her thoughts, to control the pounding in her chest. “I’m not staying away from you,” she said, but her voice was shaky. He smiled, that devil-may-care grin that made her heart lurch in her chest. “Then why do I feel like I’m the only one you’re thinking about right now?” Her face flushed. “I’m not thinking about you,” she shot back. Juno’s smirk didn’t fade. “Lira Moonfire, you’re lying to me again.” The moment felt too heavy. Too much. And just like that, she turned on her heel and walked away, feeling his eyes burn into her back the entire time.
