You Heartless Little Girl

Frost returned to the lobby only to find that Chen Peiran was still there. She had been upstairs for nearly forty minutes. He had waited for every single one of them. The moment the elevator doors slid open, Chen Peiran whipped his head around. He wasn’t a native of Yancheng. Even his overseas education had been government-sponsored. Coming from an ordinary third-tier city, he knew nothing about the city’s most elite social circle. By the time he returned to China, Frost had already left the country, so he had no idea that their junior, Shu Yang, came from an extraordinary background. She wasn’t just the daughter of Director Song from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was also the sworn younger sister of the Shen family’s young master. Xiao Liao rushed over immediately. “So? What happened?” Frost shook her head slightly. Xiao Liao’s hopeful face instantly fell. Meanwhile, Chen Peiran finally relaxed. I knew it. She couldn’t possibly pull it off. Straightening his tie, he swaggered over and deliberately blocked their path. “I already told you it was impossible, but you just had to embarrass yourself. Do you really think He Tingzhou is someone anyone can approach? No matter how powerful your father is, he’d still have to lower his head in front of the He family.” Frost hated men who talked too much. She looked at him calmly. “Excessive talking in men can sometimes be a sign of kidney deficiency.” Chen Peiran blinked. “When your kidneys are weak, your body’s yang energy declines, affecting your heart and lungs. Some people unconsciously compensate by talking nonstop to help themselves breathe.” She tilted her head. “Have you considered getting that checked at a hospital?” She spoke so seriously that Chen Peiran instinctively reached for his lower back. Realizing he’d been fooled a second later, his face turned green. “I’m not wasting my breath arguing with you.” He snorted. “Go tell your senior to focus on treating her illness instead of competing with me. Does she really think she can beat me?” ⸻ Frost had planned to tell Shu Yang the result later and think of another solution first. Unfortunately… Xiao Liao had the world’s loosest lips. She even imitated Chen Peiran perfectly. By the time she finished reenacting the scene, Shu Yang snapped a pair of chopsticks clean in half. “The second I’m discharged,” Shu Yang growled, “I’m skinning that bastard alive and serving him as sashimi.” Shu Yang had always believed breakups should end peacefully. Once it was over, both people should simply go their separate ways. There was no need to tear each other apart. Chen Peiran was the first man who made her abandon that principle. Xiao Liao slammed the table. “Exactly! Skin him alive!” Shu Yang’s fighting spirit was instantly reignited. “Go ask the doctor if I can do chemotherapy faster. Once a day. I need to get out of here.” Xiao Liao jumped to her feet. “I’m going right now!” Frost rubbed her temples. “Sit down.” “That’s chemotherapy, not a spa treatment. If you did it every day, even the King of Hell would surrender before you.” “…Oh.” Xiao Liao quietly sat back down. After a few moments of silence, Shu Yang suddenly pointed at Xiao Liao. “Know why Chen Peiran didn’t take her with him?” Frost couldn’t help laughing. “Because I’m loyal to you!” Xiao Liao declared proudly. Shu Yang rolled her eyes. “You’d be doing society a favor if you were loyal to Chen Peiran instead.” The two continued bickering. Checking the time, Frost stood. “I have to go. It’s my brother’s birthday today.” “The Shen Yu?” Xiao Liao’s eyes sparkled. “I found pictures of him online. He’s ridiculously handsome!” Frost smiled, her eyes curving. “Yeah.” Before leaving, she reminded Xiao Liao, “I’m leaving President Shu in your care.” “Just… try not to kill her.” ⸻ The birthday party was being held at Shen Yu’s private villa. As Frost got into the car carrying a homemade cake, the Shen family’s chauffeur smiled. “You made this for the young master’s birthday?” “Mhm.” Growing up, Frost had developed a new hobby every few months. No matter what caught her interest, Shen Yu always took it seriously. Swimming. Horseback riding. Archery. He had personally taught her every one of them. Baking, however, was beyond his expertise. So he hired a professional instructor just for her. Frost only learned the basics before losing interest and running back to swimming. Even so… One tradition never changed. Every year, especially on Shen Yu’s birthday, she personally baked him a cake. ⸻ Frost had been away from Yancheng for five years. She rarely appeared in public. The rumors buried beneath the dust resurfaced the moment she returned. In previous years, she had always been overseas whenever Shen Yu celebrated his birthday. This year, she no longer had an excuse to stay away. For the past few days, she had ignored every rumor circulating outside. Tonight, she’d already decided. No matter what strange looks she received… She would simply pretend she couldn’t see them. The elegant three-story French-style villa glowed beneath the night sky. Crystal chandeliers scattered dazzling light across the ballroom. The sweet fragrance of champagne drifted through the crowd. Near the entrance stood a pair of twin sisters. One wore red. The other blue. The moment they spotted Frost, both openly looked her up and down. Frost handed her coat to a servant. The ballroom was packed, yet Shen Yu was nowhere in sight. ⸻ Several men were chatting by the bar. Yue Zifeng, dressed in his usual flamboyant pink shirt, leaned lazily against the counter with a cocktail in hand. Following everyone else’s gaze toward the entrance, he froze. The women attending tonight were all dressed to impress. Heavy makeup. Designer gowns. Competing for attention. Frost was different. Her makeup was almost nonexistent. Yet she stood out effortlessly. She had a perfectly oval face with exquisitely delicate features. Her beauty should have been striking and glamorous. Instead, her clear, innocent eyes softened everything. Yue Zifeng had always said… She had the kind of eyes that made people want to protect her. Even the crystal chandeliers seemed to favor her. Silken light wrapped around her slender figure. Her black off-the-shoulder dress hugged her graceful curves, revealing elegant ankles above a pair of delicate high heels. Yue Zifeng’s eyes lit up. “Well, well! Isn’t this little Frost?” Setting down his drink, he strode over and pulled her into a warm hug. “It’s been years. Look at you—you’ve grown into such a beautiful young lady.” As Shen Yu’s childhood friend, he had practically watched Frost grow up. Holding the cake carefully with one hand, Frost smiled and returned the hug. “Brother Zifeng.” “How many years has it been? You disappeared overseas after graduation and never came back. Didn’t you miss your brothers at all?” She shook her head honestly. “No.” “You heartless girl.” Yue Zifeng laughed. “If not us, then surely you missed your brother.” Frost only smiled without answering. Another man wandered over with a wine glass. “Come on, little sister. Give me a hug too.” Yue Zifeng smacked him away immediately. “Get lost.” “Who do you think you are? You think just anyone gets to hug our little sister? Shen Yu will skin you alive if he sees that.” The man laughed. “If anyone’s getting skinned first, it’ll be you.” ⸻ Frost placed her cake on the dessert table. There were already seven or eight elaborate birthday cakes displayed there. Each more extravagant than the last. Her homemade blueberry mousse looked painfully ordinary among them. Like a security booth standing in the middle of a luxury mansion district. Just as she turned to leave, hushed whispers reached her ears. “So that’s her…” “She doesn’t look like that kind of person.” “Of course not. Nobody walks around with shameless written across their face.” “She actually looks pretty innocent…” “You’re the innocent one. She’s incredibly calculating. She knew being the Song family’s illegitimate daughter meant she’d never be accepted, so she clung to the Shen family instead.” “And she’s been trying to latch onto Shen Yu ever since.” Frost pretended not to hear and kept walking. The woman in red grew even bolder. “A brother and sister getting involved?” “That’s disgusting.” “Really? Shen Yu doesn’t seem like that type…” “How would you know what kind of man he is?” “Then why else would he keep an unrelated girl by his side all these years?” “Maybe that’s exactly what he’s into.” Frost had spent years teaching herself to ignore other people’s opinions. But she couldn’t tolerate anyone speaking about Shen Yu with such filthy contempt. She stopped. Turned around. Walked straight up to the twins. Looking them calmly in the eye, she asked, “What exactly… is he into?”
