Chapter 5: Blood and Boundaries

The courtyard was chaos. Guards sprinted across stone paths, some shifting mid-run into wolves of various hues—black, ash-gray, russet—each form sleek and fast. Shouts in both human and guttural growls echoed off the walls. The scent of wet fur and blood tainted the air. Elena stood on the top step of the veranda, her hands clenched, heart hammering in her chest like a war drum. Lucien was already gone—vanished into the woods with his most trusted warriors to intercept the rogues. “They’re not just after you,” Seraphine said from behind her, strapping two silver knives to her thighs. “They’re here to provoke. This is a message.” “To you?” Elena asked. “To him. And to anyone who protects you.” Elena’s jaw tightened. “Then let’s send one back.” Seraphine arched a brow. “You're not ready.” “Maybe not. But I’m not helpless either.” Before Seraphine could argue, a sharp howl tore through the air—high and urgent. A call for aid. “That’s Lucien,” Seraphine muttered. She turned to one of the guards. “Take her to the vault. Don’t let her out.” “I’m not hiding,” Elena snapped. “You’re not hiding. You’re surviving. There’s a difference.” But Elena didn’t move. Instead, she focused. She closed her eyes. And then—something shifted. She could feel them. Not just hear the fight in the forest, but sense it. As if the energy, the rage, the desperation of each wolf rippled along her skin. She felt Lucien’s presence like a distant flame calling her name. “He’s hurt,” she whispered. Seraphine froze. “You can feel that?” Elena opened her eyes. “I don’t know how. But I do.” Seraphine studied her for a long second. Then nodded. “Come with me.” The forest was alive with snarls and snapping jaws. The moon peeked through the canopy, casting flickering silver light over the chaos below. Lucien stood in the center of it, back to a tree, shirt torn, blood streaking down his side. His wolf form had not emerged—but his eyes were pure silver now, glowing like forge coals. Three rogues circled him, each massive and scarred, their eyes wild with madness. Then came a fourth. She was tall, her figure sinuous in black leather. Her eyes were amber, her hair like obsidian. And when she stepped forward, the others stilled. “Lucien,” she purred. “Didn’t expect to find you bleeding. Looks like even Alphas bleed when they fall for little humans.” Lucien straightened. “Zarya.” Elena stepped out from the trees behind Seraphine, and when Lucien’s eyes found her, something in his body language changed. Zarya followed his gaze. “Oh,” she drawled. “This is her?” Elena stepped forward, throat dry. “I’m not afraid of you.” Zarya’s smile widened. “You should be.” Lucien moved then—fast, fluid, feral. He lunged, claws out, fangs bared. Zarya dodged, her own form twisting mid-motion into something half-wolf, half-woman. The fight began, a blur of movement and fury. One rogue charged Elena. Seraphine was faster. She met him mid-air, blades flashing, driving both into his neck. He dropped like a stone. Another lunged from behind. Elena turned in time to throw a punch—one that sent the rogue flying back five feet. They both stared. Elena looked at her hand. “What... was that?” Seraphine’s eyes gleamed. “You’re stronger than I thought.” Lucien and Zarya crashed to the ground near them, locked in brutal combat. Blood flew. Claws raked. Then, with a roar, Lucien slammed her down, fangs at her throat. Zarya’s lip curled. “Kill me and more will come. You know this. She is the prophecy.” Lucien growled. “Then I’ll tear fate apart to protect her.” He knocked her unconscious, then stood, chest heaving, blood running from a gash on his side. Elena ran to him. “You’re hurt.” He smiled through the pain. “You should see the other one.” She pressed her hand to his side. The moment her palm touched him, the wound began to close. They both stared. “You’re healing me?” he whispered. “I didn’t mean to.” But it was too late. Everyone saw it. Everyone felt it. The mate bond had awakened—for real. Not just marked. Not just sensed. But active. And Zarya was right about one thing: Now the world would come for them.
