CHAPTER 3
POV: KAYODE
Party Hall
Blue lights lit up the hall.
Loud music echoed through the room as guests laughed and talked.
Drinks and snacks were arranged neatly on every table.
Staff moved from one corner to another, making sure everything was perfect.
Tonight had to be a success.
I looked around the hall one last time before heading to the dressing room.
POV: Dressing Room
"Ready?" I asked.
Tony adjusted his jacket.
"Yeah."
Charlie couldn't stop smiling.
"I'm asking Linda to be my girlfriend tonight. If she says yes, that's it for me."
Maxwell laughed.
"You guys are always talking about love. Don't you want to enjoy life first?"
Charlie shrugged.
"When you find the right person, you don't want to waste time."
"What about you, Tony?" Maxwell asked.
Tony grinned.
"I'm ready. Vanessa won't know what hit her."
They all looked at me.
"What about you, Kayode?"
I smiled faintly.
"I'm just here for the show."
Maxwell smirked.
"Keep telling yourself that."
I shook my head.
"Enough talking."
"It's showtime."
POV: KAYODE
We walked into the hall.
The crowd screamed the moment they saw us.
My brothers quickly disappeared into the crowd.
Charlie walked over to Linda.
"Dance with me?"
Linda smiled.
"I'd love to."
Tony found Vanessa.
Maxwell walked toward Lisa.
My eyes searched the hall.
Then I saw Kemi.
She was standing alone, quietly looking around the room while everyone else seemed to have someone beside them.
For some reason...
I couldn't stop looking at her.
Before I knew it, my feet were already carrying me toward her.
POV: KEMI
Everyone had disappeared.
My besties were already with the KTS Boys.
I was standing alone.
The hall was filled with people...
Yet I suddenly felt lonely.
Just as I was about to find somewhere to sit, I heard a familiar voice.
"Hi, Kemi."
I turned around.
Kayode.
He was dressed in a black suit.
Simple.
Elegant.
Handsome.
He looked like he belonged there.
"You came," he said.
"Of course."
"I wasn't going to miss this."
He smiled faintly.
"You look beautiful."
I blinked.
"What?"
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I mean..."
"Your gown."
"It looks really nice on you."
I smiled.
"Are you sure that's what you meant?"
A small smile appeared on his face.
"Maybe."
I laughed.
"Liar."
For the first time...
He laughed too.
A real laugh.
I stared at him.
"What?" he asked.
"I didn't know you could smile."
He shook his head.
"You talk too much."
"And yet you're still talking to me."
He chuckled softly.
Before either of us could say anything else, someone interrupted us.
"Kemi."
I turned.
Luna.
She folded her arms and looked at me.
"So this is why you've been smiling all night."
"What's your problem?" I asked.
"You're my problem."
She pointed at Kayode.
"Stay away from him."
Before I could answer, Kayode stepped forward.
"I'm not yours, Luna."
"And I'll never be."
"So stop embarrassing yourself."
Luna's face darkened.
"No one has ever rejected me."
She looked at both of us.
"You'll regret this."
She gave me one last cold look before turning around and walking away.
I watched her leave.
"She's always like that," I said.
Kayode sighed.
"I can see."
"I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault."
The silence between us lasted a few seconds.
Then I smiled.
"So..."
"Will you dance with me?"
He looked surprised.
"I was actually hoping you'd ask."
He stretched out his hand.
I placed mine in his.
His hand rested gently on my waist.
Mine rested on his shoulder.
The slow music filled the hall.
We danced without saying a word.
Our eyes met.
My heart suddenly beat faster.
Why was I feeling like this?
---
POV: KAYODE
She looked beautiful.
The black gown.
The white heels.
Her smile.
Everything about her caught my attention.
For one brief moment...
I wanted to kiss her.
I quickly looked away.
No.
I don't do love.
Not after Christiana.
"Khem..."
Tony cleared his throat behind me.
"It's time."
I took a small step back.
"I have to go."
She nodded.
"Okay.
POV: STAGE
Tony walked onto the stage and picked up the microphone.
"Good evening, everyone!"
The crowd cheered loudly.
"Thank you all for coming tonight."
"I have something important to say."
The hall slowly became quiet.
Tony looked at Vanessa.
"Vanessa..."
"Can you come here?"
She looked confused but smiled as she walked onto the stage.
Without saying another word...
Tony went down on one knee.
The crowd gasped.
"Vanessa..."
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
"I promise to love you..."
"Protect you..."
"And never break your heart."
"So..."
"Will you be mine?"
The crowd began chanting.
"Say yes!"
"Say yes!"
Vanessa covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
She nodded.
"Yes."
The hall erupted with cheers.
Tony stood up and hugged her tightly.
Everyone clapped.
I couldn't help smiling.
I was genuinely happy for them.
---
POV: KAYODE & KEMI
After the performance, I walked back to Kemi.
"So..."
"Did you enjoy the show?"
She smiled.
"It was amazing."
"And I'm really happy for Tony and Vanessa."
"Would you like something to drink?"
"Sure."
We walked to the refreshment table together.
Tony and Vanessa were still hugging.
"I love you," Tony whispered.
"I love you more," Vanessa replied.
I laughed.
"Can you two stop?"
"You're making everyone jealous."
Vanessa laughed.
"Someone sounds jealous."
"I'm not jealous," I replied quickly.
Everyone burst into laughter.
I looked at Kemi.
She was smiling.
And somehow...
Seeing her smile made me smile too.
For the first time in a very long time...
I was looking forward to tomorrow.
"I'll see you at school," I said.
She nodded.
"I'll be waiting."
As I watched him walk away...
I had a strange feeling.
Meeting Kayode wasn't a coincidence.
There was this chemistry I felt between us, and I couldn't explain it.
