CHAPTER FIVE: BEHIND LOCKED DOORS

728 Words
Elena paced the length of the glass wall, bare feet sinking into cold marble. Outside, the city blinked under the night sky. Inside, the silence was too loud to bear. She pressed her palm to the sleek door panel again. Still locked. Still no answer. He hadn’t said much…just that he needed her safe, and that this was the only way. Then he'd left. No goodbye. No warning. Just a guard at the elevator and silence in the hallway. She tried calling. Texting. Nothing. Now she was just... here. Trapped in Kael’s penthouse, surrounded by luxury and quiet, and still, utterly alone. When the door finally slid open two hours later, Kael stepped in without meeting her eyes. “Kael.” Her voice cracked. “Please talk to me.” He said nothing. She crossed to him quickly. “If this is about what Lyra said…about me…” He didn’t answer. Her hands trembled. Kael set something down on the kitchen counter. His jaw was tight. His face unreadable. “Kael…” Her voice broke now, throat thick with something she didn’t want to name. “I’m not your enemy.” He finally looked at her. Not with anger. Worse, he looked at her like she was a stranger. “Elena,” he said softly. “Just stay here. For now. It’s safer.” “For who?” she snapped. “For me? Or for your reputation?” Silence. And that silence? It split something inside her. “I’ve done nothing to hurt you,” she whispered. “But you're hurting me right now.” Still, no response. So she turned around and did the one thing she’d always done best when the world stopped listening. She ran. She waited until past midnight. The guard outside the elevator had changed shifts. She slipped through the maintenance stairs Kael probably forgot even existed. Her heartbeat so loudly she feared it would echo. But she didn’t stop. Didn’t look back. No notes. No trace. If he wouldn’t fight for her, then she wouldn’t beg. She had left once. And this time, she wouldn’t leave a single trail. Kael finds out Elena is gone. The consequences of his silence hit hard. It’s subtle, but heavy with regret. The penthouse was too quiet. Kael walked in expecting to find her curled on the couch, arms folded, refusing to meet his gaze but still there. But she wasn’t. “Elena?” His voice echoed into the stillness. Nothing. He checked the bedroom. The balcony. The bathroom. The elevator panel. Still locked. Guard still posted. Yet she was gone. His jaw clenched. “How did she…?” He hit the panel again and again. “Where the hell is she?” No note. No message. Just a forgotten pair of earrings on the sink and the faintest trace of her scent in the hallway. Then it hit him… She ran. And this time, she didn’t want to be found. Kael sat on the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees, hands clenched. He hadn’t meant to hurt her. Just protect her. But now, sitting in the emptiness she left behind, he realized something far worse than betrayal. She had begged him to believe her… And he had chosen silence. Not because he didn’t believe her. But because he was afraid he already did. And now she was gone. The city lights blurred past as Elena sped through crowded streets in a borrowed taxi. Every glance over her shoulder was a stab of fear. Not just for herself, but for what she’d lost…trust, safety, and maybe, love. Her heart pounded, but this time, it wasn’t from desire or hope. It was pure adrenaline and pain. She clutched the small bag she’d packed…just enough to keep her alive, nothing more. No phone, no ID, no digital footprints. Just the shadows and her will to disappear. She passed strangers who didn’t know her name, didn’t know her story. It was a strange kind of freedom, but a lonely one. Her mind raced…What if Kael followed? What if he never believed her? What if she was alone forever? Tears threatened, but she swallowed them. Running didn’t mean giving up. It meant survival. She had no trails this time, no breadcrumbs to lead him back. Just silence. Just the night. And a broken heart learning to beat again.
