14 When Anna reached the bottom of the stairwell, she opened a heavy, orange door and stepped into a place with a musty smell. The lights came on as soon as the motion sensors detected her, revealing a tunnel that ran off to her right. The plain, gray walls gave the place a dreary feel. Her boots left visible prints in the layer of dust that covered the floor tiles. No one had been down here in quite some time. Not surprising given that most of the work was done by robots. Three pipes ran through the tunnel: a large, fat one in the middle with two smaller ones on either side. Those handled stormwater and wastewater.
