A STEP CLOSER

📖 CHAPTER SEVENTEEN A Step Closer It had been a week since the fight. Daniel sat in the study room, pretending to work, but his mind kept drifting to Aisha. Her absence had left a quiet ache he couldn’t ignore. When the gate opened, he looked up—and there she was. Aisha, holding her notebook, pausing as if she had second thoughts. “Hi,” she said softly. “Hi,” he replied, standing quickly. “I… I’m glad you came.” She gave a small, hesitant smile. “I wasn’t sure I should.” “Why not?” he asked gently. “Because… last week,” she began, “I didn’t want to make things worse.” Daniel shook his head. “Things aren’t worse. We just… needed space.” Her eyes softened, and for the first time in days, the tension between them eased. They sat down, carefully at first, then closer than before, their fingers brushing unintentionally. Neither pulled away. “I missed this,” Daniel admitted quietly. “Missed you.” Aisha looked at him, and for a moment, the weight of the past week melted. “I missed us too,” she whispered. They worked together, laughter slowly returning, small jokes shared, and a quiet understanding forming between them again. As the lesson ended, Daniel walked her to the gate. This time, there were no words needed. Their smiles said everything. Unplanned love wasn’t simple. It wasn’t easy. But after the fight, after the silence, it felt more real than ever. And in that quiet moment, both knew one thing clearly: They were willing to try again.
