đź“– CHAPTER FIVE
The Risk of Wanting More
Daniel woke up the next morning with a decision he hadn’t planned to make.
He wouldn’t avoid her.
If Aisha was determined to keep things distant, he would respect that—but he wouldn’t pretend nothing had changed. Pretending was harder than honesty.
When she arrived that afternoon, she looked different.
Not in appearance—but in the way she carried herself. Careful. Guarded. As though she had already chosen restraint over feeling.
“Good afternoon,” she said.
“Afternoon,” Daniel replied. “Let’s start.”
They worked quietly for a while. Too quietly.
Finally, Daniel broke the silence. “You don’t have to punish yourself.”
Aisha looked up. “Punish myself?”
“Yes. This distance. This silence.” He exhaled. “I didn’t ask for it.”
She closed her book slowly. “Neither did I.”
Her honesty startled him.
“I like you,” she continued, voice steady but soft. “That’s exactly why I’m being careful.”
Daniel’s heart thudded.
“You like me,” he repeated.
She nodded once. “But liking someone doesn’t always mean we should act on it.”
He leaned back, processing her words. “So what do we do?”
Aisha thought for a moment. “We continue. Respectfully. Honestly. And if feelings grow…” She paused. “We acknowledge them—but we don’t rush.”
For the first time in days, Daniel smiled.
“That sounds fair,” he said.
As she packed her things later, he walked her to the door again.
“This won’t be easy,” he said.
She met his eyes. “Nothing meaningful ever is.”
As she left, Daniel realized something important.
Unplanned love wasn’t just about surprise.
It was about choice.
And for the first time, he was willing to choose—even without knowing the ending.
