Chapter twelve

1765 Words
Bella couldn't move a muscle after Luke left. She thought she knew it all. She had thought everything had happened as she thought. Her mother was murdered. They murdered her mother... She had been a fool to think they Loved her at one time. Who would have thought? 'Bella, you've been a fool.' She lamented. She didn't know how long she was sitting there but her grandmother's voice brought her back to the present. "Bella... Why are you crying? Did he do anything to hurt you?" Her grandmother asked as she held Bella's hand affectionately. "Grandma... What should I do? What do you think I should do?'' She sobbed. "You could start by telling me exactly what happened to you. You could start by telling me all that you've kept bottled up inside you. " Her grandmother urged. Bella knew it was time to open up. She had kept it bottled up for too long. Her grandmother had never pressured her into talking about all that had happened before she had been sent back to Nigeria. "Grandma... Am sorry." "What are you sorry about dear?" She asked as she stretched her hands to hold Bella's hands. "What happened?" "You have been so understanding of me and I never put myself in your shoes. You and Grandpa had received me without asking questions and even when I found out I was pregnant, you both did not reject me. Thank you so much..." Bella said with tears running down her cheeks. "You are my grandchild so, normally, we welcome you." Her grandmother said and wiped Bella's tears. "Tell me what is causing these tears." She urged. "Grandma.... What do you think I should do?" Bella asked her grandmother. She controlled her tears and told her what she had kept in her heart for too long. Maybe it was time to look past the betrayal and think of the way forward. Her grandmother listened without interrupting her once. "My dear girl... You endured so much__" She said and pulled Bella into a hug. "What do you intend to do now?" She asked after Bella had calmed down. "I want them to pay. I want to make them suffer as much as they did to me. Does that make me wicked?" Bella asked her grandmother. At that moment, she had made up her mind to make her stepmother and sister pay. They had done very bad to her and she wanted to see them suffering. "That makes you human my child. I'll always be here when you need me. I hope you know that." Her grandmother said. "Thank you so much, grandma." Bella felt light after speaking with her grandmother. Now, she knows what she has to do. Luke was also a victim in all of these so, they might as well work together. "I think I should give Luke a call," She said after making up her mind. "But first, I need to go see the kids and tell them the truth. Do you think they will hate me for lying?" Bella asked after a little thought. "Those children are amazing Bella. They will not hate you. Just tell them and you'll find out that they are the best." Her grandmother assured with a smile. "Okay. I need to go home. I'll call you later to let you know how it goes. I pray they still love me after today." "Gosh! You are being scared for nothing child. You'll be surprised at how sensible your kids are. Go ahead and tell them the truth. They'll never hate you." Her grandmother assured her with a gentle squeeze of her hand. "Go on and leave the rest of the work to me." She added with giving Bella a little push. Bella left for home and all the while she was scared. When she got home, the children rushed to welcome her. "Mummy!!" They rushed into her arms after the door had been opened for them. "How is my big man and my lady?" She asked them after disengaging from the hug. "Fine" "Cool" Olivia and Oliver answered. Bella dismissed their babysitter and said to them. "I have something to discuss with you both. Come and sit here." They both sat down with her and waited. Bella took a deep breath and somehow, she felt like she was about to be sentenced. "We won't bite Mom. Just talk. We are your children." Oliver said and Olivia nodded her head in support of what her brother had said. "Okay. Here is the thing. Your father is alive and he is here. Am sorry I lied to you both." Bella said in one breath. She didn't want to make it too long or else she might just say nonsense. "We knew about that already," Olivia said with a smile. Bella was confused by what she said and looked from one to the other with confusion written all over her face. "Yes, Mom. We knew already. We've even met him." Oliver added. "How?..." "When we saw him here last weekend, we knew he was our father so, I did my research and got his number. Called him and we met after school." Oliver explained that it wasn't a big deal. "Am still very confused. How did you did you even suspect? I mean, how?" Bella tried to form a meaningful sentence. "Calm down Mom! You'll give yourself a heart attack. How could we not know he is our father when My brother and daddy looks so identical?" Olivia asked with a smile. They'd met Luke secretly and agreed not to tell their mother. They knew she would be pissed and didn't want that. "Daddy? You even call him daddy?" Bella asked. She had planned to tell them about their father and was hoping they wouldn't be too shocked but the reverse was happening. She is the one getting shocked. How come her seven years old children had managed to find their father after meeting him once? Is that really possible? "Yes! We accepted him. How could we not?" Olivia asked her mother. "You guys are... Can you tell me how all these happened?" Bella asked them. "Well, we found out that you lied when you said our father was dead," Olivia said. "Since when?." "Well, let's say we've known for a look long time now. So when we saw him, we took action." Oliver explained. Bella was the one getting shocked after hearing all of this. A week ago... When Oliver and Olivia were asked to go back inside by their mother, they had seen the person at the door. After Bella had locked the door behind them Olivia the talkative couldn't keep her suspicions to herself. "Brother, is it just me, or did I just see a man that looks exactly like you?" "I saw him as well and Mom looked scared. I think that's our father." Oliver said. "You think so? But Mom said our father is dead. Is he back from the dead?" Olivia asked. "No one comes back from the other side. This just means he never died. Mom lied to us and am sure there is a reason why she would do that." Oliver said thoughtfully. "Yes! You are right. Should we pretend like we know nothing when mom comes out or we ask her." "We pretend like we saw nothing and wait for her to tell us on her own but, we'll find him ourselves and find out if he is worth being accepted as our father," Oliver said. He had always believed himself to be a man and had always taken that role seriously. "Okay. I'll follow your lead." Olivia agreed. She would do whatever her brother suggested. He has always known best. While they were still talking, Bella came back inside and didn't tell them anything about their father. Oliver who knew things about computers was able to dig around and find their father's number. He called and Luke was shocked when he found out who was calling. They met with him on a school day. After their mother had dropped them off at school, Luke who had been waiting came out of his car and met them. Before he could say anything, Olivia asked him. "Did you break Mommy's heart?" "No." He answered. "Did you marry another wife?" Oliver asked the next question. "No. I have never been married." Luke answered. It seems his children had called him over for questioning. "Then, that means you abandoned her after finding out she was pregnant," Oliver concluded. He had to have done something to their mother. "No... You both are getting it all wrong. I never knew your mother was pregnant I have been looking for her for eight years and I only just found out about you both." Luke said to them. "Then, that shows how incapable you are. How could you not be able to find us for so long?" Oliver said with a frown. "I found you within two days. And you couldn't find us till now. We won't accept you." He added and held Olivia's hand so that they could walk into the school. "Wait!! How about I make it up to you both? And your mother? I came here to get you all. Give me a chance." Luke couldn't help himself. He felt like hugging them so badly but didn't want to rush the children. But one thing he was feeling deep inside was pride. His children are so amazing. They had managed to get in touch with him on their own and they were also trying to protect their mother. "I promise to make it up to you all. Especially your mother." He added after a while. "Fine. We'll give you a call." Oliver said. "Let's go in." He said to his sister and walked away with her. Luke stood and watched them go in. Before they disappeared from view, Olivia looked back and smiled at him. That smile lightened his world. ...Back to the present... Bella was shell-shocked. How had they done that? "Does that mean you both are not angry at me?" She asked them. "We are not. You had your reason. We don't blame you" Olivia said with a smile. Then added. "Does that mean we'll get to see him all the time now?" "I think so... Would you both want that?" She asked. "Yes! I went that! Can we call him over for dinner?" Olivia asked excitedly. Bella felt the least she could do for them was to call him over. "Okay. We can call him over."
