29 Toronto 1961 I’d poured myself a couple of fingers of Crown Royal, well, maybe a tad more than that. The Duke tickled the ivories on the Beauti-tone turntable while Ella’s voice melted like butter through the stereo-phonic speaker. I lost myself in the music letting those silky notes carry me along, bobbing on a gentle tide. I kept an apartment above the office. When I’d been a cop, I’d saved just about every penny I’d grafted for and sunk it into the building. The office occupied the second floor while a ladies’ dress shop, catering to a stylish clientele, took up the first. The rent covered my mortgage and then some.
