Cressida's POV
I was still slumped against the cold wall, shrinking from some of the wolves who passed by. My body still trembled with hurt.
Fenrick…he was right there, just beyond the door with my sister. I felt like my heart might stop anytime soon.
They hadn't even noticed me when I entered and left the room. My wolf was still howling in agony. “Ours,he's ours.” I closed my eyes, trying to steady my breathing. I was trying to convince myself what I had seen wasn't real.
A soft gasp startled me, pulling me out of my trance. The door creaked and my eyes flew open. Fenrick's gaze landed on me.
This was the Fenrick who used to look at me so tenderly like nothing else mattered in this world.
Larissa froze beside him, her eyes wide with panic. “Cressida…I..”
“Don't,” I whispered,my voice shaking so badly it was barely audible. My wolf snarled inside me furiously and I wanted nothing more than to lash out at them.
I felt like sinking my claws into his chest, just so he could feel all I was feeling right now.
Fenrick's hand shot forward, grabbing Larissa by the wrist and drawing her back to his side. “She already knows.” He said, his eyes were cold with a wicked glint in them. He tugged her back again like he was trying to protect her from me.
“You…” I couldn't even speak, I felt suffocated, my throat feeling dry. My heart pounded so loud in my ears,I thought it might break my ribs.
“You're weak,” he said, the words were slow and deliberate, like an arrow shot straight into my chest.
“Wake up Cressida,One day,I'll become the Pack's Alpha and I need a strong Luna like Larissa by my side. Not you,you don't even have a wolf.”
The world titled slightly and my wolf howled inside me as if to protest. My chest ached so badly my knees almost buckled and I had to grip the wall for support
I have a wolf, I have a mate. I am not weak,I'm not. But I couldn't even say those words out loud.
Fenrick didn't flinch and Larissa looked at me with guilt flashing across her perfect, golden features but I didn't even care about her excuses,I didn't want to hear them. My golden hope had been replaced by a raw burning shame.
“We…we have a ceremony,” I stammered,my voice hoarse and shaky. “Tonight…this isn't just your birthday..it's a…a mating bond. And you didn't tell me?”
Fenrick's lips curved into a wicked smirk that made my stomach drop. “I didn't think I had to report to you. Besides, it wouldn't matter if I told you because tonight I would have still chosen Larissa anyway.”
“Face it Cressida, you're not Alpha nor Luna material.” He added.
My body shook uncontrollably,my laughter turning into sobs. I felt so stupid,so stupid to have thought he would choose me, to have thought he'd look at me differently, always.
I forced myself to step back and tried to calm myself and breathe, to collect what was left of my dignity.
Larissa tried to speak again, her voice filled with guilt and soft with panic. “Cressida, please…it's not what you think it looks like. You have to..”
“I don't want to hear it!” I spat,my voice cracking slightly. “Just shut your f*****g mouth! You hear me?”
Fenrick's eyes glinted with cold amusement. “I should have expected this from you. A weak and deluded little wolf. You always believed that s**t about having a place by my side. Didn't you?”
My chest heaved,my fingers digging into the wooden door beside me. My wolf's disdain flowed through my entire body. “I am your mate” I hissed, those words actually disgusted me now. “You belong with me Fenrick. Mine…you've always been mine.”
Fenrick laughed cruelly. “Yours? You couldn't hold me even if your life depended on it. You're nothing but a shadow of your sister.”
“Then why? Why did you come for me? Why didn't you go for Larissa from the beginning.” I almost yelled but my chest felt tight and breathing was becoming unbearable. “ Why did you make me believe you loved me for the past 6 months?!”
“You were always so easy. I just needed a few sweet words and you worked so hard, stood all the insults just to get your father to make me the Pack's were-warrior leader.” He scoffed at the end of his last sentence.
The sting of his words was so unbearable but I had to try so hard to pull myself together. This delusion that he was still my mate and somehow this was all a prank still hung around my head.
“We should go,” Larissa finally whispered, tugging at Fenrick's hand, her eyes pleading. “Let's just finish this.”
“Finish what?” I demanded, stepping forward to block their path. “The ceremony? You mean you're binding with my sister? I am your mate Fenrick. You're binding another without telling me?”
Fenrick's smirk deepened and he took a step closer, his shadow towering over me. “Exactly, you're not worthy to stand beside me as Luna Cressida,I hope you understand this is nothing personal.”
I stumbled back, pressing myself against the wall. I will not be cast aside,I will not be ignored, I refuse to just back down and let all of this happen.
I could feel the shift in the air as Fenrick and my sister prepared to leave the room. Fenrick brushed Larissa's hand intimately. The room seemed to shrink around me, every heartbeat was louder than it was supposed to be in my ear.
I had been deliberately kept in the dark all this while, while my sister stole my mate from me. I had been denied my mate,my bond,my destiny…deliberately.
And now I had to watch my mate bond with my sister under the full moon on the day I had thought everything would take a better turn for me.
I stood trembling with anger,my fingers clenching into fists. My wolf cried for justice. My life had been stolen from me in a cruel calculated move.
I forced myself to move, all of my muscles painfully shaking,my throat felt raw but I was determined never to be ignored again. Not tonight, not ever again.
I stormed through the crowd, the laughter and music fading around me.
Every eye turned towards me as I crossed the room. “He is mine!” I cried,my voice loud across the hall and trembling with rage. “He's my mate! And no one will take him from me!”
The crowd’s gasps rippled across the hall as all the wolves began to whisper, covering their mouths in shock.
I met Fenrick's icy gaze as he glared daggers at me.
“You don't belong here,” he growled. “You're causing a scene and acting pathetic.”
My father's eyes darkened, his face falling with disappointment. His presence emanated his Alpha authority that pressed down on me, suffocating me. “Cressida,” he called, his voice sharp and commanding. “Enough of your nonsense! You're embarrassing me!”
I laughed like a deranged person. I would not relent. I would not let anyone walk all over me again, even if it meant finally going against my father.
“Embarrassing you?!” I yelled, glaring at my father.
He stumbled back, surprised by my tone.
“I've always been an embarrassment to you,so why act as if this is new to you?!” My voice was loud enough to hide the trembling of my entire body.
“Stop it I said!” He cautioned like a warning.
“Why do you always take everything from me and give it to your golden daughter?!” I stepped forward, coming face to face with my father.
“Remove her.” He commanded his guards.
“Wait!” Fenrick raised a hand stopping the guards who had begun to approach.
“I have to do this the right way.” He nodded to Larissa.
My heart raced with anticipation and I thought maybe he had come to his senses but what he said next made me stumble back,my spirit breaking all over again.
“I,Fenrick of The Wolfgang pack, reject you,Cressida Wolfgang as my mate.”
I felt a searing pain travel through my whole body,my heart clenching painfully.
“Please Cressida…” Larissa whispered, her eyes pleading sadly.
The two guards stepped forward again and grabbed me. My pulse raced in my ears. My father was a cruel man and he would not forgive me for this embarrassment tonight.
Suddenly a voice shattered the moment. Fenrick's father burst in panting, his eyes wide with horror. “Alpha! Wolves…Bloodfang! They're attacking. There's too many of them!”
The hall exploded in chaos.. the music was replaced by screams, shouts, growls and the distant sound of claws tearing flesh. The guards froze, dropping me as the terror swept the hall.
My wolf whined, sensing the danger even before I could see it. I scurried along the floor as my instincts screamed at me to run and hide. As the first shadow moved across the hall,my survival instincts kicked in.
I froze as my sister’s scream pierced the night.
