CHAPTER 4 Fire and Blood

1176 Words
POV: Elena Valen I woke to a beating in my chest that had nothing to do with fear. It was anger. Rage. A fire I hadn’t felt in years. My wrist throbbed, the mark throbbing as if alive, telling me that I wasn’t alone in this pain. The door burst open. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?” Rafael’s words tore through the room. Not a word. Not a threat. A storm. I pressed back against the wall, staring. Gold eyes, burning like liquid fire, locked on me. His chest heaved. His jaw was tight. His hands curled into fists. “You,” I said, voice shaky but strong. “You’re the one who marked me. Not me.” He stepped closer, and I could feel the air between us spark. “Don’t,” he growled. “Don’t act innocent. You think I don’t feel it? You think the bond lies? Every beating, every pulse of your blood… I feel it all.” I swallowed, trying to steady myself. “Maybe your curse finally found its match,” I said softly, and the words felt like sparks thrown into fire. His eyes narrowed. “Match? You dare” “I dare,” I interrupted. “Because I’m not your enemy… and I’m not afraid of you.” A spark of something crossed his face, surprise, perhaps, or amusement. And just like that, our tempers collided. Fire met fire. “You’re defiant,” he said, voice low, dangerous. “And it will cost you.” “And maybe I don’t care,” I said, voice shaky but firm. “Because I won’t bend. I won’t kneel. I won’t follow just because you want me to.” He lunged. Not violently, not yet. But close enough that I felt the heat of his body. The excitement of his presence. My pulse surged, and I realized… my heart wasn’t just beating with fear. It was pounding with something else. Something dangerous. “What… what are you doing?” I whispered. “Testing you,” he said softly. “Pushing you. Seeing how far this fire can go before it destroys you… and me.” I shook my head. “You’re insane. This bond… it’s already killing me inside.” “And yet you feel it,” he said, voice dropping low. His hand brushed mine accidentally or maybe not. The mark flared. Sharp pain. Pleasure. Confusion. Rage. Desire. All mixed into one. I recoiled, shaking furiously. “Stop!” He moved forward. Close. So close I could see every fleck of gold in his eyes, every line of his jaw, every shadow of anger. “I can’t,” he whispered. “Not when you burn like this. Not when your fire matches mine.” “You’re insane,” I said again. “And you’re… dangerous.” “And you,” he said quietly, voice quieter now, almost a growl, “you’re irresistible. And annoying. And maddening. And I could destroy you…” I froze. Heart beating. Mind spinning. “You… what?” “I could destroy you,” he continued, stepping closer. Inches away. So close I could feel his breath. “And I might.” I pressed back automatically. “Why… why would you do that?” He shook his head slowly, almost lost in thought. “Because the mark binds us. Because I feel every breath of yours. Every beat. Every throb. Every thought. Every fear. And yet…” His lips curved, dangerous, teasing. “…and yet I want more.” I stared at him, amazement and something else I didn’t want to name twisting inside me. Desire. Hunger. Temptation. Fear. Rage. All twisted together. “You think I want this?” I said, voice sharp. “I hate you! I” “You don’t,” he interrupted, almost quietly. “Not really. You hate what you feel for me. Not me.” My chest tightened. Rage burned, but beneath it… something else. Something dangerous. Something I didn’t want to admit. “You think I’m afraid of you?” I asked, trying to push him away. “I’m not. I’ll fight you. I’ll fight this. I’ll fight everything.” He laughed softly, dangerous, dark, and full of heat. “Oh, I know,” he said. “That’s why I want you. That’s why I need you. That fire you carry… that spark… it’s living. And it scares me.” “Scares you?” I repeated, denial and shock running through me. “Yes,” he said, voice low. “Because it matches mine. Because it challenges me. Because it’s… beautiful. Dangerous. And alive.” I shook my head furiously. “I… I don’t care about pretty. Or dangerous. Or living. I care about surviving.” He stepped even closer. I could feel his body heat. The pull of his presence was powerful, almost unbearable. “And that is exactly why you’ll stay. You’ll endure. You’ll learn. You’ll survive. And you’ll live with what we’ve become. Together.” I swallowed hard. “Together?” “Yes,” he said. His lips barely inches from mine. “In every pulse. Every beating. Every wound. Every wish. Every danger. Together.” I shivered. My body failed me. My pulse jumped. My wrist burned. The mark pulsed furiously. My chest ached. My mind reeled. I wanted to hate him. I wanted to push him away. I wanted to scream. I wanted to fight. I wanted to run. And yet… my body failed me. “You’re insane,” I whispered. “And yet,” he said, voice dropping even lower, almost a growl, “you’re exactly what I need. And I can’t stop. I won’t stop. Not now. Not ever.” The tension between us crackled, a storm of anger, desire, fear, and heat. My heartbeat matched his. Our breaths mixed. Our bodies almost touched. I realized, with a thrill and a fear I couldn’t name, that for one fleeting second… hate turned to hunger. I gasped, stepping back, shaking. “I… I can’t…” “Can,” he said softly. “Will. Must.” And then he stopped. Inches from my lips. His golden eyes burned into mine, sparkling with something I couldn’t name. Desire? Anger? Hunger? Power? “I could destroy you,” he whispered, voice scary and low. “And I might.” My stomach dropped. My pulse raced. My chest burned. And for a moment, I felt like I could die from the stress alone. “Then… then why…?” I whispered, voice shaking. He didn’t answer. He just held me there, inches apart, the mark between us shining fiercely. Fire and blood. Anger and desire. Hate and hunger. And I knew one thing with frightening clarity: nothing would ever be the same again. My hand trembled against his chest, the mark pulsating furiously. I realized with fear and excitement that if I moved, if I acted, if I hesitated… one wrong move could ignite us both, and neither of us might survive what was coming next.
