ELISE' POV
Elise was so consumed in her thoughts that she didn't hear all the cheering and applause.
After all the guests had left, she decided to confront her father about why he hadn't told her about the marriage before the announcement.
“The union of you and the heir to the Reeds was necessary, as it would benefit us and strengthen our bond”. Elise' father didn't care about how she felt at all.
But that didn't make Elise bothered at all. “If it was so important why didn't I get involved when you were arranging your so-called union and business strengthening? What if I was seeing someone else? What if I'm pregnant with another person's child?”. Elise got angrier as she asked each question with her voice raising.
“Enough!... enough you little girl, i won't take anymore disrespect from you. You're getting married to Lucas Reed and that's final.”
Elise looked at her father with rage in her eyes and stormed out of his study room.
She immediately went to mother's room hoping to get a bit of relief.
“Why didn't you warn me sooner than this was happening?.” Elise could take disappointment from anyone, but not her mother. All she wanted was answers…answers to what this marriage was about and why no one had told her earlier.
“I tried stopping your father, and convincing him to tell you at least, but he wasn't willing to listen to anything I tried to say.”
“You should've tried harder!” Elise shouted as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Silence filled the room. Elise felt betrayed by her own mother, after Nathan she was the only person she loved, and now…this.
She immediately headed to Nathan's room, everything still looked like how he left it the morning before he died. His game controller on the desk, headphones hanging on the chair.
Elise made sure no one entered the room since Nathan's death. She kept all the keys to herself.
It had been her way of comfort since she couldn't see him physically any more.
She silently walked in, sat by the edge of the bed, rested her head on it and started crying.
*If you were here you'd have found a way to make me laugh despite all these, you always saw the bright side in everything and tried to make every bad situation happier. I miss you so much everyday and I wish we could be together again.*
Elise hadn't realised she slept off in Nathan's room till the next morning when she woke up from a notification. It was from an unknown number and she wondered who could have been texting her.
Normally she wouldn't have paid any attention to the text but she saw Nathan's name and it immediately drew her attention.
*What could this be?.* She immediately opened the message out of curiosity and couldn't believe what she had just read.
*If you want to find the truth about Nathan's death, then get married to Lucas Reed.*
She immediately tried to screenshot so she could show her mother but her phone died as soon as she read it.
Then she remembered last night, the argument with her parents, and immediately decided not to tell them about the message.
Her dad never listens to her and there's nothing her mum would do rather than say things to irritate her.
She wondered what connection the Reeds had with Nathan's death but was determined to find out. She had also suspected her family knew about it but wondered why they'd want her married into such a family.
A million thoughts ran through her head, but she couldn't possibly find the right answer.
She immediately stood from where she had slept and rushed to her room, frantically searching for her charger. As soon as she saw it she plugged it and paced around impatiently while waiting for the phone to come on.
The moment the screen lit up, she opened her messages.
The text was still there.
She read it over and over again, hoping it would somehow make sense if she did.
*If you want to find out the truth about Nathan's death, then marry Lucas Reed.*
“Who could this be?” She whispered, with her hands shaking slightly as she dialed the number.
The call didn't go through.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Elise held her head in frustration, trying to calm herself. Whoever sent the message clearly knew her had an idea about Nathan's death, but who was it?, and why would they want her to get married to Lucas? What did Reeds have to do with his death?.
At this point her head was already hurting so bad, so she decided to take a shower. Unluckily for her the shower had broken so she had to use the tap. Each moment she took the bowl just frustrated her more so she decided to go to the bathtub.
She stayed there for an hour, trying to escape reality and figure out what she could do.
Then it hit her, she hadn't actually searched Nathan's room since his death, she only went there each time she was sad and needed comfort.
But what if she had overlooked something?
When she got up she hurried back to his room, praying she'd find something…something to expose the real truth about Nathan's death and keep her from marrying Lucas.
She searched his desk first, opening drawers filled with pens, old notebooks and receipts from places they had visited together. Nothing seemed odd to her.
She had checked beneath the bed, through the wardrobe, on top of the wardrobe, and even the boxes he staked in the corner.
“Come on Nathan, please give me a clue”, she said with a shaky and broken voice.
At this point she was about to give up when she noticed his old laptop tucked beneath a pile of books.
Nathan never allowed anyone near his gadgets and Elise respected that. But now that laptop could be her saving grace.
She carried the laptop, dusted it and sat on the edge of the bed. She searched around for the charger but when she couldn't find it she rushed to her room with the laptop to continue there.
It took a while to come on, and when it finally did she tried his usual password.
