Eric POV
I open the bottom right drawer of my desk. On top was a thick leather binder and CD carved into the top. I pulled it out slowly and placed it on my desk. Everything about her from when we first met to where her asshole of a husband sent her to jail. Many people would think this was stalking. I like to think of it as I’m staying interested in what she’s interested in.
She won many awards for writing and poetry. I had a photo of her coming out ceremony. She wore a long white gown and had long elbow gloves on. She stood with her back straight head held high. She was in a crowd of girls all looking the same except they were smiling, she barely had a smirk on her face. Any thing that was ever written about her I printed off or cut out and placed in this book. I even had the photos of her and that dickwad husband. She never smiled in those pictures either. I was told she loved him but that was all speculation.
Joe was head hunted by Tommy, at my request. Tommy hates working with men who abuse their wives. I explained that I wanted an eye kept on him. I wanted to make sure that CD stayed safe. Tommy agreed but only because I had asked him too. Many times Joe would come in wearing gloves or have a bandage across his fingers. He claimed its because he was a boxer. There were a few times he would show up in a fit of rage and would shut himself in his office canceling all morning meetings. He was unprofessional as they come but he was also a top divorce lawyer in the state and top divorce lawyers bring good money to the office. So Tommy reluctantly kept him on.
Tommy didn’t know about the trial against CD until it was almost too late. Joe had beaten her to the point of a miscarriage. Than took her to court for the murder of their unborn fetus. Tommy tried to represent or even assign someone else to represent CD but she refused. Joe had already had someone assigned to her case and she couldn’t refuse him or what he wanted even though that meant freedom. She knew she was not going to win the case, she knew that no one would be able to win. The case against her even though it was bull s**t it was strong and Joe, well Joe was best friends with the judge. They would go golfing and to bars, and strip clubs. They even had weekly poker nights.
The Attorney she was assigned was a fresh out of college intern for the state department. He didn’t know his head from his ass let alone how to handle an abused beaten wife case with a forced miscarriage. Unfortunately she was given the maximum sentence.
There was nothing I could do. The only saving grace was Tommy was able to have her sent to the prison Gerald was working at. Gerald was able to send me daily updates and monthly photos. Unfortunately during her time in Prison d**k head managed to get her commissary blocked so she never was able to buy any of the stuff she needed. Gerald connected me with her roommate and I promised her extra money in return for purchasing whatever CD needed with out knowing it was coming from me. I didn’t need d**k head to hear that she was actually getting what she needed. I would also send money to Gerald to buy her stuff that might not have been in commissary like special snacks or the brand of tampons she used. He would bring them in and hide them in her room when she wasn’t around.
For almost five years she was in there. I was not on the visitors list so I could never go and see her. I tried to write her letters but they always got returned. Gerald informed me that she was going to be released early. I decided to try one more time. I told Gerald to let Her know I was going to pick her up. I flew down a few days earlier and I was planning on the night she was released for us to fly back. I was going to help her get out of his clutches. Get her a divorce and treat her like my queen.
The prison was a cold evil shadow against the rising dawn. I sat and waited in the parking lot. The shift change showed guards dragging their feet as they finished a long shift. The incoming walking in heads high, faces refreshed and travel mugs of coffee walking towards the door. Around eleven a Black Maybach pulled into the parking lot. The driver parked crooked across a handicapped spot. Then a bus was driving down the driveway parked on the edge, a few people getting off. They must be here for visiting hours. I stepped out of the car a leaned against my car as a small group of inmates walked out of the prison. Many walked towards the bus.
CD stood on the sidewalk her eyes rose for just a second looking around. Then Joe stepped out of the Maybach. Her shoulders sagged in defeat. s**t. I came for her and the asshole still found out she was being released early. He walked her to his car and helped her inside. I’ll need to figure out a way to free her now.
During CD’s time inside the prison. Joe got married four more times. Thanks to his religion he was allowed to have as many waives as he wanted. All four of them were knocked up. He was living in the land of the pretend good guy husband that everyone likes.
Tommy mentioned once how he would have loved to let Michael or Desmond go crazy on him. As much as I also wanted to do that and it was a great idea. Joe has too many powerful friends in high places. He likes to push people to a breaking point. We need to neutralize him before we get rid of him. It won’t be easy.
As I was staring off into space, a hard firm knock came at my door.
My companies top lawyer Anastasia Boyton poked her head in. Anastasia is CD’s spunky fun loving cousin. She never went into detail’s with me as to why but I know she was disowned after running away for her arranged wedding. When they found her she was beaten almost to death. Michael found her after she was left almost dead on the side of the road. He brought her to me here in Vermont. Once she was healed I helped her get her law degree and she was so grateful she came to work here at my company.
"Hey Eric, you busy?"
"What can I do for you today, Anna?"
"So I got a letter from my cousin. Thought you might be interested?"
“Which cousin?”
“Don’t play stupid. You know which cousin.”
She tossed the letter on my desk and there her hand writing as beautiful as ever on the page. She then ran her hand through her short silvery purple hair. She recently decided to shave the sides and leave the top longer. I sent a photo to Michael who has had the biggest crush on her since the day he saved her but never had the guts to ask her out. He in return sent the gif of the dog rolling its tongue out and hearts floating out of his eyes. I think she feels that same way but has never admitted it. My eyes turned back to the page before me.
Dear Anaya,
As you know my release date was coming up and I am finally living on the outside. It’s strange being free and being out from behind the cold walls.
I received your letter before I was released and I was so sorry to read that you had to put down your beloved dog. Putting him down must have been so hard for you and I wish I could have been there during your greatest time of need.
To answer your question my husband was the one to pick me up and it is just like how it was before I was sent to prison. I take care of all the household chores and even his new wives who have permanently moved in with us. Joe has taken to working very long hours. Sometimes he leaves very early in the morning and not returning until the sun sets. Sometimes even later. The new wives do not help with the household. They state they don’t need to help they are just for show.
There is a family reunion on the 30th of the month. I am hopeful that I will get to see you while we are there. If not, I totally understand.
I am hoping and praying that all is continuing to be well with you and that you are able to find some peace during this time of absolute need.
I miss you everyday
Cass
“Thank you for sharing this with me Anna. But I need a bit of an explanation to this letter. I know for a fact you don’t own a dog. I know you didn’t know from her when her release date was coming since she wasn’t allowed to speak with anyone but dumbass. So you want to help me out a bit?”
“Ugg you’re such a guy. In laments terms this is essentially a letter of her asking for help. She wants us to come and get her.”
“How the hell did you figure that out.”
“All right here let me explain. OK, so I know to you this seems like a weird letter. A few years ago, we came up with some code words and phrases if either of us were ever in trouble. Like you see here where she says putting him down means the beating has gotten worse, that Joe is hurting her again like his own punching back. She's afraid that he's going to kill her one of these days. The word help.. well that’s obvious, she’s asking for help. Her explaining how it’s like it was before she went to prison means that he is beating her again, most likely also r****g her and trying to impregnate her again. He has wanted her pregnant since she was 14 so he could control her but her father put his foot down on that and demanded she keep her virginity until she got married. Now here where she’s saying how he works long hours, that will help us with the timing to get her out. Although I would think first thing in the morning after he’s left would be the best. The sooner the better. Once he leaves for work we can change her appearance and make her look like my sister. They always looked similar. And we can get her out without anyone noticing. And as you see here at the bottom she mentions a family reunion. We’ll my guess is that he’s going to bring her to visit home and that won’t be good. The last time they visited home she was beaten so hard that she was in the hospital for a week. Today’s the 26th so we have to get her out we only have a few days.”
"How on earth did you two figure all this out as kids? This is incredible."
"When we were kids, we always knew that, coming from a rich, well-off family, that we would be sold to a future husband. I was smart and refused. She was always a good girl and wanted to do as daddy said. So we decided to come up with basic phrases that would look innocent enough to other people if the letter got intercepted, but we would know immediately that something was going on. That one of us was in danger and needed to be rescued, and instead of calling, this must mean that Joe has a very tight leash on her.
I opened up my laptop as she was talking to me, and messaged my Pilot letting him know we needed to head for Texas. Jeremy’s a great pilot. He messaged me back almost instantly letting me know to meet him at the air strip by 6.
“Anna go home, grab your passport, pack what you need,, I’ll pick you up around 4 and we’ll head to the jet. Jet leaves at 6. Grab an outfit for CD too.”
“I think I have some clothes that will work, I will need to run to the grocery store as well. I’ll need to pick up stuff to help fix he appearance.”
“Get what you need. Here use my card. Text me when your ready.”
I’ve never seen her move as fast as she did running out of my office. Out my window she got into her Yellow Volkswagen Bug with the in your face white flower rims and the bee sitting onto her antenna. She speed out of the parking lot.
Margie being one of the best assistants I had ever employed was like everyone mom. She would bring in fresh cookies once in awhile and made sure that everyone was healthy and well even recommending doctors or places to get a spa treatment done.
“Margie, could you please cancel or post pone my meetings for the rest of this week. I have urgent business I need to attend to.”
“Of course Eric. Go get your girl. I can’t wait to meet her.”
“How’d you know?”
“Oh Sweetie you have that look in your eye that she’s in trouble. You’ve been staring at that picture you have of her on your desk since you returned the last time. She needs you go to her.”
“Thanks Margie. I get her this time. I’m not going to let her go.”
I went home and packed a few items. I also grabbed my sweatshirt that I had worn earlier and packed it into my duffle bag. I grabbed my passport and some extra cash. I wanted to use my cards only when necessary. I took a moment a called Tommy before running out my door to go get Anna.
"Hey brother, what can I do for you?"
“Hey Tommy, Listen CD sent a letter to Anna. She’s in big trouble. Joe’s hurting her she begged to be saved. I’m going to the air port as soon as I pick up Anna and we’ll be flying down. I’m thinking we’ll be in around 3 or 4 in the morning. I need you to have a car waiting for us at the Austin Airport.”
“Consider it done. I’ll send a confirmation of the make and model of the car and where its parked. I’ll deliver it myself. What else can I do for you?”
“I’m going to need a hotel room. Preferably 2 bedrooms. I don’t know what kind of shape she’s going to be in but I want to make sure that she’s comfortable. Also concerning Joe. Can you have him come in early or stay late? Keep him busy tomorrow. I want to be able to get her in and out quickly without him noticing she’s gone.”
"So you're kidnapping her? It’s bout f*****g time bro."
"Sorta, more like a rescue mission."
"You think he's beating her again?"
"And r****g. I need to rescue her. I can't keep watching her go through this from a distance. I need to protect her and make her safe again. She was hell she still is my everything even without her in my life the way I want her to be.”
"Alright bro. The car will be waiting for you at the Austin airport. Joe has a big case anyway, so it'll be easy to keep him till the early hours. What time does your flight leave Austin?"
"Our flight home is around 6pm. We need time to change her appearance before heading to the airport incase anyone she knows spots her.”
"Alright, I’ll get everything taken care of for you Eric. Good luck man, and safe flight.”
“Thanks man.”
