"Sleep well... my light” - whispered Cole with a smile as he bent and put his lips on the hair of his daughter.
The little one, with her eyes, already closed, was deeply asleep.
"And to think that I could not even get past the first two pages of the story...” - Cole told himself as he put the book on the small shelf and, a few minutes later, left Ellie's room.
Of course, leaving the door ajar.
“I don't want that something like what happened before, happens again... not if I can avoid it"
After all, he still remembered that night, one of the first after leaving his parents' house, that a cry from the young girl woke him up in the middle of the night.
A scream that made Cole jump out of his bed and, running, headed for the girl's room.
Unfortunately, and perhaps because he was half asleep, he did not remember that they no longer lived with their parents and that the bedroom door opened towards the other side.
The blow was heard all over the floor.
“And let's not talk about my beautiful nose ...” - the young man muttered while touching it lightly
“I do not know how it wasn't broken".
And the worst part was that his light was not even awake.
Ellie, wrapped in her quilt, was sleeping soundly as she mumbled about beautiful little dogs with black legs and snow-white bodies.
So, since then, he did not forget to leave the door open, so he could better listen to whatever was happening in his daughter's bedroom.
"Just in case..."
However, that night, as soon as he had gone out into the hall, he closed the door and went to the living room.
His mother had just left and, finally, he was completely alone.
His smile had already disappeared at the same moment he closed the door, and with a look of deep sadness, observed the date that was on the calendar that was hanging on one of the walls.
"His birthday is in two weeks...” - he thought sadly
“as it is the anniversary of our separation ..."
゚・ 。゚ FLASHBACK ゚。・゚
“I will NEVER trust you again! “ - Jax had shouted in front of everyone,
"Do not touch me again, you disgust me!".
"Jax please, I ...” - Cole began to say as he tried to approach the young man and grab him by one of his arms.
As soon as his father had announced the impending wedding, Cole, completely pale, had left his parents and the young woman who was watching what was happening without saying or doing anything, to run towards the boy who, with his face streaked with tears, was getting up from the ground with the help of his two best friends.
“NO!” - Jax exclaimed taking a couple of steps backward
“I do not want to know anything else! ... stay with that girl and with the son that you are waiting for ... the one that needs to go away is me ...!"
“At least he understands...” - Mr. Powell muttered behind Cole
Jax sobbed.
After which, he turned and ran towards the door while being followed closely by Em and the rest of his friends.
But not before Paul, with his face completely red with anger, went towards Cole and hit him in front of everyone.
゚・ 。゚END OF FLASHBACK ゚。・゚
"I deserved it ...” - Cole told himself as he opened a small dresser in the living room and took out a bottle of liquor from inside,
"just as I deserve to have to see him with other people ... happy and enjoying his life without me.."
A few seconds later he had filled one of the empty glasses with the dark liquid to immediately bring it to his lips and drink it in one go.
“If only I had been stronger ... if I had not made so many mistakes ...” - the young man murmured as he wiped a tear and, with trembling fingers, he took the bottle again and filled the glass for the second time.
After which, and with the cup full in his hand, he approached one of the dresser drawers and, being careful not to make any noise, opened it while observing the little packets that were inside, wrapped in bright colors and gift bows.
With a sob, he picked up one of them, the first one.
"The gift I was going to give to Jax that day ..."
A gift that it had been very difficult to buy but that, however, the young man would never open...
Cole laughed lightly to immediately sob again.
Quickly, and before he stained the wrapping paper with his tears, he returned it to the inside of the drawer, locking it with a key.
“You have to learn to forget, Cole” - the young man murmured to himself
“you have to let him go ... Jax will not come back, he deserves someone else ... someone who is not a widower or single father, a good girl ... who does not have a past like yours ... or who hasn't made the mistakes that you made. "
Someone much better than he had ever been ...
And, with a sigh, he approached the little table where his mother had left her magazines.
“I need to think about something else ...” - he murmured as he took the first of them and sat in one of the armchairs.
His eyes widened in surprise.
After all, on the cover of the magazine, there was a picture of Jax with a young woman that Cole knew very well.
A young woman he had not seen in three years.
A young woman who, smiling broadly, was walking through the streets on Jax's arm while greeting the journalists who were taking the photographs.
“Amy ..."
