The room was completely dark except for the small lights of the stereo that, turned on, was letting the only occupant of the room hear the first verses of his favorite song.
A song that was almost talking about his painful love for Jax:
The person who always stayed by my side
That person is you
I can’t hold onto it but I can’t let go
My painful love
How much more do I have to throw myself away?
Can you hear my sobbing heart?
I want to hug you like crazy
I can’t stand it without you
The person who always stayed by my side
That person is you
I can’t hold onto it but I can’t let go
My painful love
Even if I give up my everything
You’re my only one person who is worth it
My person, who is sadder than me
The person who will silently hug me
That person is you
I can’t stop it but I can’t block it
My painful love
My love
Cole, standing in the center of his living room, brought the bottle to his lips as he moved along the music.
His eyes were completely closed and his lips, still wet from the liquor, opened up to hum slightly the lyrics of the song.
It had been a couple of hours already that Evan had called to tell him that his niece was at home and that, if he did not mind, he would like for Ellie to spend the night and the next day with them.........
“It will be good for her to be with another child of her age with whom she can play” - Evan had said on the phone.
"One that does not reject her"
Yes ... Evan had not said it with those words but ... it was not necessary.
Cole knew it ... he knew perfectly well how the other children were treating his daughter.
After all, Evan had already told him, on many occasions, what that school was like.
"They are all snobs” - he had said to him one day that they had met in Brian's bar
“but, undoubtedly, the worst part is the parents ... they do not accept anyone who is not from their circle. I should know...after spending the worst years of my life among those four walls! "
Cole had agreed with him and, on that occasion and with a determined gesture, had left the pub with the firm intention of talking to his father.
"And we already know how that ended ...” - thought the young man while turning the phone with one of his hands, "with my father demanding that I marry again for the good of the family ..."
“Cole? Are you listening to me?"
The young man sighed as, with his head on the armrest of the sofa, started to look for the bottle of liquor he had left on the floor.
“Ahh ... yes ... Ok” - Cole murmured as, finally, his fingers brushed the cold glass of the bottle.
His lips then showed a slight smile as, with joy, he had just noticed that there was still some liquor inside of it.
“Cole ...” - Evan finally whispered from the other side of the phone
“are you drinking?".
At the question, Cole let out a chuckle that immediately made Evan sigh with sadness and disappointment.
“I'm going there and ... do not let your mother or Ellie see you like this ..."
“D ... Don't wr .. worry” - replied Cole while coughing slightly after choking on the cold liquid
“I am not ... I... I'm not druuunk and ... they arr.. are at Ms. Rose hoouse "
Evan sighed, much calmer. After all, he could easily imagine the reaction of Mrs. Powell if she came to see her son in that state.
“I'll pick her up there ... and you ... you ... stop drinking!"

The connection, seconds later, had been cut off.

゚・ 。゚ A FEW HOURS LATER ゚。・゚
While Cole was still lost in a world of songs and liquor, in the neighboring apartment a woman was crying in the arms of her friend.
“He has done it again!” - exclaimed Mrs. Powell as she moved away slightly to look, with tearful eyes, at the face of her best friend.
When his son had told him that he wanted to leave the mansion, she had initially refused.
After all ... where could he be better than with her and his father?
But in the end... she had finally understood that Cole needed to be alone, to get away from her husband who, with each new argument they had, plunged him deeper and deeper into that depression that did not seem to want to let him go.
A depression that had started because of them ... For that obsession of wanting to decide the life of their only son.
And then ... the death of Brie ... the loss of his best friend, his wife ... had ended up destroying the young man who had finally resorted to drinking as a means of escape.
Something that, without a doubt, had almost finished with him.
"But now ... that JAX ..."
“That man is going to destroy my son!"
Rose, after letting out a sigh, looked toward the door of the apartment.
"It's great that Evan had taken Ellie away from here but ... maybe he should not have mentioned anything about Cole."
Although, with the expression that the young man had while arriving at the apartment, it was not very difficult to notice that something had happened.
Something that, without a doubt, he was trying to hide from Emma.
And her friend, as perceptive as she was, had noticed it at once and forced Evan to tell her everything he knew.
And now ... now Emma was inconsolable ... terrified that Cole would return to the same thing.
“Emma ... maybe it's not as bad as you think ...” - the woman started saying, trying to calm her friend the best she knew “Cole does not drink every day ... only on certain occasions and ... as you said, he is going through a bad time, it may not be anything of importance. "
However, Mrs. Powell shook her head.
“You do not understand!” - she exclaimed as she took her friend's hands in hers
“his eyes ... his eyes are the same as those of two years ago!"
゚・ 。゚ FLASHBACK ゚。・゚
“NO!” - Cole exclaimed as he rose from his chair with a sudden movement
“I'm not going to get married again!"
His father, however, barely noticed the young man's reaction because, as always, he kept looking at the stock market reports that had just arrived on the Internet.
“Of course you're going to get married ... you're young and, most importantly, Ellie needs a mother."
Cole shook his head.
“That's not true! Ellie already has me, her father, and the rest of the family. She does not need anyone else!"
“Father?” - Asked Mr. Powell while raising, for the first time, his gaze from the papers
“What kind of father spends hours with a bottle?".
The young man paled.
“You..."
“I warn you ... or you get married and give a mother to Ellie, one that is of our same social level or ... I will simply ask for the custody of my granddaughter. You are not qualified to take care of her!".
Cole said nothing.
He just turned around and left his father's office.
“Son ...” - murmured Mrs. Powell who, in the doorway, had been waiting for the conversation between her two men to end.
And now, she watched how one of them resumed his work while the other simply headed towards his bedroom.
Mrs. Powell followed her son quickly.
“Cole!” - she exclaimed as soon as she managed to catch up with him
“your father does not mean it ... you know how he is ... he does not ..."
However, the young man just let out a chuckle.
“Mum... just leave me alone for awhile... I need to think"
゚・ 。゚END OF FLASHBACK ゚。・゚
“Emma ..."
Mrs. Powell sighed, separating herself from her friend enough to look at her.
“Rose ... I do not know what to do ... Cole has fought so hard to get out of that” - she muttered
“And now ... everything he had achieved is about to disappear, and all because of that boy ... of that Jax Singleton!"
