Chapter Five: What We Became

Zane’s POV

“So, you mean to tell me you know nothing about the suspect!” I yelled

“Why would I know anything about it” Liam said.

At this point it was clear to me that he was the wrong guy and my uncle was definitely wrong with this one.

“So, what made you not come to work for a while” I asked while catching my breath.

“I had a family emergency. My dad got into a coma and I had to rush to be with him” he said

“Oh, my apologies. How is he now”

“He’s getting better now. At least that’s what the doctor said” Liam said

“Okay, that’s good to hear” I said, looking at his striking beautiful eyes

“So, were you able to get anywhere close to the suspect?” he asked

“Yes, but we still have a lot of work to put in”

“Maybe we can work through the night if that’s fine with you,” Liam asked.

“I mean, yeah sure, why not?” I said?

A part of me was excited that I would get to work with him alone but it just felt wrong to see my coworker that way. We got working and Liam got us food.

“Wow this is really nice. The steak is just beautiful,” I exclaimed.

and I noticed Liam staring and looking away.

“Yes, it really is” he said. “By the way do you do anything other than just work?” Liam asked

“Yeah definitely. I have a farm and a barn which are precious to me.

“Okay nice, nice” he said “I also play the piano as well” as I said that Liam paused and gave me a long stare

“You are joking, right?” he asked.

“No, I’m dead serious,” I said.

“Wow, that has to be the least of things I expected from you. Perhaps I’ll get to hear it someday,” he said.

“Well, really few people know about this and I definitely had a life before taking over an empire.”

“I wish I could say the same,” Liam said

“What do you mean by that?” I asked

“For as long as I can remember, I haven’t known anything other than ruling the underworld.”

I was so keen on hearing what he had to say because he has never really said anything or open up.

“As you know, my father, he was really powerful and he made sure I knew everything about running an empire. I never got the chance to have and live my childhood. Growing up with my father was extremely difficult and that’s why at my young age, I am able to rule the empire conveniently,” Liam said, taking a deep breath.

“I am really sorry to hear this. I guess this is the life meant for us,” I said.

“Yeah”

“You have gorgeous eyes. They are the most breathtaking eyes I have ever come across.”

“I knew you were always looking at them unusually,” Liam said, laughing.

I haven’t heard Liam laugh and his laugh was as majestic as he was. I didn’t know what was happening at the moment. Have I fallen for him?

“You sent that money from an offshore account, right?” He asked

“How did you know that?”

“That was not the question,” he said.

“Well, yes,” I replied

And there was this very long pause between us, then in that moment I just reached out and kissed him.

“I am sorry that wasn’t meant to happen,” I said, and mid-sentence he pulled me back, and I had the longest kiss of my life and we both went home as though nothing happened.

The day after and days after it we didn’t stop. I would find any opportunity to kiss him and we'd both take it. With Liam, it’s like I found something new and precious to me and then one day we went for a work trip together.

“Finally, some alone time” he said

“Yeah, why don’t we make the most of it” and he started kissing my legs to my neck and every part of my body and we were laid.

After our make-out session, we both decided to rest on the bed.

“You’re beautiful,” he said “Maybe you waited all this while to eventually meet me,” he said, laughing.

“No, you’re beautiful” I said and we both lay in silence.

“So, what do we tell everyone” Liam asked

“We don’t need to. We will jeopardize this operation and our empires as a whole so it’s best we don’t say anything for now” I said while caressing his black hair.

“Yeah, you are right but I don’t want to live in the shadows because I have been doing that all my life” he said

“There will be a way” I said

“I love you, Liam,” I said, sitting up, “and you don’t need to say it back.”

“What’s that?” Liam asked

“It’s a mail from Adrian saying that Roman has been severely attacked, and they got to him but he was lucky enough to survive.”

“We’ll have to go first thing in the morning,” Liam said

“Yes sure”

The next morning, I couldn’t find Liam in the room, I looked for him everywhere but couldn’t find him then I sent a text and no reply. I got a text from Adrian saying to come to the empire immediately.

When I got to meet the organization, everyone was present

“What’s the matter I heard Roman is in critical condition” I asked

“They are coming for you” Uncle Matt said

“Who”

“Roman is coming for you” Uncle Matt said

“Why, can someone tell me what the issue here is” I asked fearfully

“There’s no time again, Run Zane Run!!!!!”
