Escaping the Dungeon

1530 Words
I heard Josh groan as we tried leaving the dungeon, he picked himself up from the ground faster than I expected. It hadn't been up to minutes since we left the dungeon, he dragged me back from behind, his eyes blazing with anger. "Stop, Josh!" Max's voice, a low growl, filled with authority that demanded obedience. Josh hesitated, his muscles tensing, but he obeyed. He glared at Max, then at me, before letting my hand go and straightening his shirt, muttering under his breath. Max turned to me, his expression a mixture of concern and determination. He gently took my hand, his touch surprisingly warm and comforting amidst the cold and dampness of the dungeon. "We need to get you out of here," he said, his voice soft but urgent. "How? They'll catch us before we make it out of the dungeon. I heard the old vampire say that you were hurt pretty badly by my bite and it would take a while for you to heal, are you okay now? If you are not okay then I don't think we should bother trying because the punishment would be worse if we get caught." My voice trembling with a mix of fear and concern as I spoke. The cold, damp air of the dungeon seemed to press in on us, making every breath feel like a struggle. I could see the worry etched on your face, even in the dim light cast by the single torch flickering on the wall. He took a deep breath, his eyes meeting mine with a determined gaze. "I'll be fine," he said, it's not that deep," The wound is healing faster than expected. We have to take this chance while we still can. Staying here isn't an option." I wanted to believe him, but the gnawing doubt in my mind was hard to ignore. "What if we get caught?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What if we don't make it?" I continued almost crying and he squeezed my hand reassuringly. His eyes met mine, filled with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine. "Trust me," he said simply. Max darted his eyes towards Josh with his voice barely a whisper filled with rage, he said. " Ensure our cover is not blown, if we get caught I will never forgive you. You've to understand that she was never supposed to be here in the first place,I am the cause of all this and I will come back to you as soon as this whole mess is over. So please, cover our tracks. We both halted at the sound of Josh's voice as if thundering in the corridor of the dungeon where we stood. " You think you can get away with that speech, right?? I have always let you had things your way because of the love I have for you but it's a different turn now, if you are leaving with that b***h, then you leave me no choice," "I will stop at nothing to make sure everyone knows about your escape and I'll also make sure the king knows that you want to let her escape and lest you forget, your actions might put your position on the line." Josh's words hit me like a truck at full speed, I can't let this happen, Max will lose his position as the price of he leaves with me. Even though my brain registered the fact that he was the one that brought me into this mess, I couldn't bring myself to let him lose anything for me. His voice jolted me out of my reverie. Do as you wish." He glowered at Josh. My feelings for you is also on the line depending on your actions. Without another word, he led me through the dark, twisting corridors of the dungeon. The flickering torchlight cast eerie shadows on the walls, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. My heart pounded in my chest, the thought of Josh exposing us filled my mind as we moved swiftly yet cautiously. As we rounded a corner, the sound of footsteps approached, growing louder with each passing second. Max pulled me into a small alcove, pressing his body against mine to hide us both in the shadows. His breath was warm against my ear, and I could feel the rapid beating of his heart against my back. The footsteps grew closer, and I held my breath, praying we wouldn't be discovered. My body was tense, every muscle coiled with fear and anticipation. The scent of damp earth and mildew mixed with the faint aroma of Max's cologne, creating an intoxicating blend that heightened my senses. Finally, the footsteps faded, and Max let out a breath, relaxing slightly. "We need to keep moving," he whispered, his lips brushing against my ear, sending a shiver down my spine. After what felt like an eternity, we reached a small, concealed door. He carefully opened it, revealing a narrow staircase that led upwards. "This way," he said, motioning for me to follow. The staircase was steep and winding, As we ascended, the air grew warmer, the oppressive chill of the dungeon slowly dissipating. Finally, we emerged into a dimly lit corridor, the faint glow of moonlight filtering through a nearby window. Max turned to me, his expression serious but hopeful. "We're almost there," he said, his voice filled with determination. We moved quickly but quietly, navigating the unfamiliar hallways. As we neared the exit, the sound of voices reached us. Max cursed under his breath, pulling me into another hidden alcove. "Stay quiet," he whispered, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. The voices grew louder, and I recognized the king's authoritative tone among them. Panic surged through me, but Max's presence was a steadying force, grounding me amidst the chaos. When the voices finally faded, Max squeezed my hand, a silent reassurance. "Let's go," he said, leading me towards a nearby door. We slipped through the door and found ourselves in a courtyard bathed in moonlight. The cool night air was a stark contrast to the oppressive atmosphere of the dungeon, a welcome relief that filled me with renewed hope. Max turned to me, his eyes reflecting the moonlight. "We need to move quickly," he said, his voice urgent yet calm. As we sprinted across the courtyard, the distant sound of alarms echoed through the night. The king had discovered our escape. "Over here," Max called, leading me towards a hidden passageway concealed by overgrown vines. We ducked into the passageway, the walls narrowing around us as we moved deeper into the shadows. The sound of pursuing footsteps grew fainter, but the danger was far from over. Finally, we emerged on the outskirts of the castle grounds, the forest stretching out before us like a dark, protective shroud. Max turned to me, his expression filled with a mix of relief and determination "Keep running," he urged, taking my hand and pulling me into the dense forest. The trees closed in around us, their branches creating a canopy that shielded us from the prying eyes of the castle. The forest echoed with the sounds of our escape, the rustling leaves and distant calls of nocturnal creatures creating a symphony of freedom. Despite the pain and fear, a sense of exhilaration coursed through me. We were free, at least for now. Max slowed down, finally stopping near a small, hidden clearing. He turned to me, his breath ragged but his eyes filled with resolve. " You will have to continue from here, I can't let them know that I am missing if not they will link it to your disappearance and know I am involved ," he said, his voice gentle but firm. Bile formed in my throat, my stomach lurching as the words came out from his mouth." I can't do this alone, I will get caught and besides i thought they already discovered your escape. How do you intend on going back?" I managed to whisper. Don't worry, I will lure them away and make sure none of them finds you and I have my ways, the king likes me" He said, reassuring me and gently squeezing my hands. His eyes finds mine, tracing them to my lips, he plants a kiss on them and removes his jacket, using it to cover me. He was a bit taller than me, so it fitted me perfectly as a very short gown. I stared into his mesmerizing green eyes, wishing that we had more of these moments. He pulled me closer to him, his breath hot against my neck as he whispered."You'll make it," his voice a soft promise in the darkness. "Perhaps, we'll meet again and find a way to end this." And as I looked into his eyes again, he wore a fake smile and a familiar voice interrupted. " There they are." ****Intriguing right??
