Carlo downed his fifth glass of vodka in one go, his face twisting as the burn tore its way down his throat. He swallowed it anyway, slamming the empty glass onto the table like he was punishing it for existing. Across from him, Henrietta lounged back in her chair, eating berries straight from the bowl. Every so often, she reached for the vodka bottle by her side and took a long drink straight from it, grimacing only slightly before going back for another berry. They hadn’t spoken in a while. The lawn stretched out before them, bathed in pale moonlight. The grass looked almost silver, shadows from the trees lying across it in long, uneven streaks.
