I slid down the bed until I hit the floor, knees pulled to my chest, eyes locked on the screen. Paramedics loaded the stretcher into the ambulance, the sheet slipping just enough for the camera to catch those red letters one last time before the doors slammed shut. THOU SHALT NOT LIE. The words burned behind my eyes long after the image was gone. I had always known the Morelli name came with shadows. I had married into them willingly, eyes open, telling myself the darkness would stay at arm’s length.
