SIXTEEN In the middle of her third night as Lady, her walkie-talkie buzzed into action. The sound wasn’t too intrusive, but it woke her up. In the haze of half-sleep, it took Shea a few seconds to remember where she was and exactly what the static and the flashing light meant. Grabbing up the device, she sat and pressed the button while raising it to her mouth. “This is Alpha, come in,” she said and released the button. The doctor’s voice came through the walkie “We need you to come to the infirmary, immediately,” he said, sending a shot of adrenaline firing through her that propelled her onto her feet. “There’s someone here who wants to talk to you.” Freezing in place, she processed the tone of his voice before his words filtered through.
