THIRTEEN Shea’s daze had taken on a new hue by the morning. Having been in the records room all night, she hadn’t had a wink of sleep. The drone of the alarm from the other side of the courtyard signaled that the inmates were being woken up. That was what alerted her to the time of day. Throughout the night, she’d absorbed as many words as she could. Some of the reports Shea read moved her to tears, others made her feel so sick that she had to stop reading. The one thing that became achingly clear was that the prisoners on the compound were dangerous, all of them. She hadn’t even made a dent in the volume of files.
