CHAPTER 12: SHADOWS AND EMBERS

344 Words
The city of Emberhold never truly slept — but now, under the cloak of twilight, its shadows seemed darker, alive with whispers. Nyra stood atop a crumbling balcony overlooking the maze of narrow streets below, the embersteel blade resting heavy at her side. The fire within her pulsed steady but alert — Syrathrax’s presence a comforting ember in the quiet storm. Kaelen’s voice broke the silence. “We don’t have long. The Black Brand hunts you. He moves like smoke, leaving death in his wake.” Nyra’s gaze hardened. “Then we need to find the others. The scattered Emberbound. If we stand alone, we fall alone.” 🕯 A Lead in the Market District Kaelen led Nyra through twisting alleys and bustling markets, where the scent of spices and smoldering coal mingled. They sought an old contact — a trader who dealt in relics and whispers. The trader, a wiry man with sharp eyes named Rilvan, spoke in hushed tones. “I’ve heard of one — Liora of the Ashwilds. A firecaller, hidden beyond the Scorchwilds. She’s lived in exile since the Sundering.” Nyra clenched her fist. “Then we go there. We find her. We light the first spark of the rising.” Unseen and silent, the Black Brand moved through the city’s underbelly — a specter clad in ash-black leather, his blade forged from cursed embersteel that seemed to drink the light. His target: Nyra. A flash of movement, a whispered breath — but Nyra’s senses flared just in time. Flames leapt to life, casting the assassin’s shadow away as he hissed in frustration. “You cannot hide from the fire, Emberbound,” he spat, retreating into the dark. A Rising Flame Nyra’s resolve blazed hotter than ever. “We’re not just fighting to survive,” she told Kaelen as they paused atop the city walls, the night sky alight with distant fires. “We’re fighting to reclaim what was lost.” Syrathrax’s voice filled her mind, fierce and proud. Then rise, Emberbound. The fire is yours to command.
