Chapter Twenty-SixRuth left the boarding house. Morning dew on the grass was beginning to disappear under the warmth of the sun. She cast an eye at the blue sky and smiled. The day promised to be a long one spent outside, so the lack of gray clouds was a good sign. As usual, Varis left the apartment before dawn. The note on the kitchen table said it was unlikely she’d return home before nine o’clock that evening. Ruth hitched her purse strap over her shoulder and set off at a brisk pace. The light breeze lifted her hair. She waved at busy merchants who swept dust and debris away from their storefronts then glanced at her watch. Her heart skipped a beat. Less than three hours before she was scheduled to pick up the OSS pouch and get it to the next stop. Three blocks later, Ruth stepped in
