Henry It did not take long for my shoulder to heal and by the start of the winter of 64,’ I had joined back with my fellow comrades in battle. We had built miles of trenches outside of Petersburg trapping Lee and his army within the confines of the town. Our siege on Petersburg and our main intention was to starve the Rebel army into surrender. The Rebels were under siege the entire winter of 64’, and Grant was able to cut off all their supply routes. It wasn’t until spring of 65’ that Lee tried to make a run for it. Lee knew his army could no longer survive the siege with all his supplies being cut, so he grew desperate. Lee made his final stand on April 9th, 1865 at the Appomattox Court House
