Chapter 4

Lena walked through the doors of Hawthorne Global the next day. The moment she arrived, she was thrown into the corporate world. It was meetings after meetings, calls every other minute too. Any other person would have complained about the workload but not her. She loved every minute of it, and it was still only her first day. She knew she had made the right choice by applying to Hawthorne and coming to work here. It was only a matter of time before her dreams would come true. If she continued at this pace, she knew she would climb up the corporate ladder in less than a year. Everything was going great, all she had to deal with was Adrian. Adrian had Lena where he wanted her, and he was going to make sure she didn't escape. Lena knew she would be working with the finance team of Hawthorne. What she didn't expect was that Adrian would be directly in charge of this team. What this meant was that he would personally oversee all the affairs of the finance team and, in order to effectively do this, the finance team was located on the same floor as Adrian's office. And immediately, Adrian had laid his eyes on Lena during the interview. He knew he was going to hire her and keep her close by. All he needed was a reason to have her close to him. He found his reason when he looked through her resumé and discovered that she was a financial analyst. Everything was just working in his favor and he wasn't complaining. Lena had awakened something in him and now, he couldn't stay away from her, no matter how much he tried. It was for this reason Adrian arranged that Lena’s desk be placed right outside his office, so he could see her whenever he wanted. Everytime Lena looked up from her desk, she would find Adrian's eyes on her, and he wasn't even being subtle about it. She could feel his sharp gazes, and it made her heart faster. She could feel him looking at her as she was typing. Even when she stood up to drop something at another person's desk, she felt his gaze following her. It was maddening. Anyone looking could tell that she was the one he was looking at and this wasn't helping Lena in the office. Talk about a dramatic first day. She had noticed that people were acting weird around her. She had even asked her team leader if she could change the position of her desk, to which he responded, “The CEO himself made sure your desk was placed here.” And what that meant was, no one had the power to change where her desk was. What was even worse was that Lena herself couldn't stop her mind from going back to that night too. The music at the club, the drinks at the bar, the way he whispered her name in the hotel room. She tried to focus on other things like emails and reports, but it didn't help. Every little thing took her back to that night. “Hey.” One of her coworkers finally approached her, making her snap out of her daze. She remembered the lady had introduced herself as Claire. Thank God Lena had such a good memory, otherwise she would have forgotten her name. “Are you good?” Claire asked. “Yes, I'm good. "I'm just tired. "It was a bit difficult for me to sleep because of the excitement of the job.” Lena lied, that wasn't why she was spacing out. She was thinking about a certain someone. “Ohhhhh okay, I thought it was because of the CEO. He's been staring at you like he wants to eat you or something all day long.” Claire whispered to her. Lena just let out a nervous laughter, shaking her head too, “That’s not true, you're just imagining things.” When it was time for lunch, Lena couldn't take it anymore. She waited till everyone had gone for lunch before going to talk to Adrian. She knocked on his door and entered his office. “What can I do for you, Miss Carter?” Adrian asked. Pretty surprised, Lena came into his office on her own. “Why is my desk right in front of your office, sir?” You have a glass wall, you can see everything we're doing out here.” Lena complained. “Why are you bothered about where your desk is? "Do you have something to hide?” Adrian asked her back too. “No sir, I have nothing to hide, but it makes me feel uncomfortable when all I can feel is you staring at me and everyone else can see it too,” Lena explained further. Adrian stood up from his chair and slowly approached her, “Did you think about me after that night?” Her breath hitched at his question, and she froze. “That's not a professional question sir.” She answered in a quiet but steady voice. Adrian was now in front of her, and he suddenly bent down and placed his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent. She still smelled the same way she did that night. He hadn't been able to get her smell out of his head either. “No Lena, it's not a professional question.” He murmured into her neck. Lena stepped back and put some distance between them, but their eyes locked again. Adrian had that look on his face again, and she couldn't ignore the growing s****l tension between them. She wanted his mouth on her body once again and also felt his hands tracing down her body too. “Do you always make your employees uncomfortable like this?” Lena asked, snapping out of his control. “Only the ones I've seen naked.” He whispered to her. She put more distance between both of them, “What are you doing? Are you trying to seduce me?” “No, I'm doing no such thing. I'm only trying to figure out if I can work with you.” “And can you work with me?” She asked him back. He didn't answer her immediately, instead he walked back to his chair and sat down, “That depends Lena. Can you work with me? Knowing everything we did that night?” Lena couldn't say anything again, her mouth immediately went dry. “I guess we'll find out,” she answered. Lena had left the office later that evening. The activities of the day, along with everything going on with Adrian had made her tired and all she wanted to do was just sleep. But as she arrived at her apartment, she noticed a familiar car parked in front of her apartment, Jason's car. She peeked into the car and, to her horror, Jason was there in the car, but he was not alone. Right there in the driver's seat, he had another woman in his lap and he was kissing her with so much passion. What was worse was that the woman turned out to be Lena’s twin sister, Lina. “I can't believe both of you.” Lena spat at both of them. She remembered how Jason had been persistently trying to get her to talk to him throughout the weekend. He had sent her flowers, jewelry and other kinds of gifts and just today, while she was at work, he had called her to tell her about a weekend trip to Santorini he had booked for the both of them. But it was all a lie. “It's not what it looks like, I can explain, babe. "I was waiting for you, then Lina came, and we were just talking and…..” Jason started but Lena didn't want to hear. “Don't, I don't want to hear anything from either of you. "We're done,” she said, and left them both standing there. The next day, Lena went back to work. She tried to forget she had caught her boyfriend and her own twin sister cheating on her just yesterday. She hadn't even cried yet, she didn't want to waste any tear on Jason. She was so lost in her thoughts she didn't notice Adrian standing beside her desk, “Meet me in my office in the next five minutes.” It was then she looked up at him, “Is something wrong?” “Just come in the next five minutes.” He instructed her. Just as he had instructed her, she went to his office after five minutes. “What's wrong with you? "You're distracted?” he asked. “Nothing sir, I'm fine.” Adrian stood up and walked closer to her, “No, you're not.” “With all due respect, it's none of your business, if I'm fine or not.” “It's my business Lena, I need you focused.” He answered with fire in his eyes. Lena looked away, the look in his eyes was only pulling her in. “I have a proposal for you, Lena,” Adrian continued. Lena looked at him with a frown on her face, “What kind of proposal?” Just as he was about to talk, Lena’s phone buzzed in her hands and when she looked at it, it was a text from Jason. Adrian also saw who the text was from and he frowned. Thanks to the investigator he had hired, he had found out all about Lena’s relationship. What had brought her to the club that night, even the situation that happened last night. He knew about everything, so he knew who Jason was. And it was because of Jason. Adrian wanted to make a proposition to Lena. “You can't go back to whom Lena, not after everything.” Lena was surprised. Did he know about Jason? Did he know about what had happened between them yesterday? “You're right, I can't go back to him.” She answered before turning off her phone. “Just say yes to my proposal.” Lena hadn't even waited to hear what he was proposing, she just said yes and, just like that, the game began.
