They got to the packhouse and saw everyone running helter-skelter. People gathered in groups murmuring.
They walked to a group where they saw more of their age grade. The moment Odessa and Freya got close, they stopped murmuring.
“Odessa, your father has been looking for you,” Clara muttered.
“What is going on? What has happened?” Odessa leaned in closer to listen.
Clara looked at Freya and remained silent. Freya dragged Odessa out and continued moving.
“We have to get to the Alpha's lodge, we still have to tell him what we saw.” Freya kept dragging Odessa in haste.
“Hey!” a voice interrupted as they tried entering the alpha's lodge through its open gate.
The Alpha's lodge was one of the three prominent structures in the Packhouse; not every wolf was allowed to move freely. The noble families had a blue bangle that signified their nobility.
The boy who had interrupted gazed at their palms in search of those bangles. He winked at Odessa.
“You may enter.”
“She is my friend, and we are here to see the Alpha.”
Odessa had to explain, it was obvious the boy had just resumed duties and wasn't aware of Freya's frequent visits to the Alpha's lodge. Odessa and Freya have been playing with Akira for more than eight years.
“Without the bangle, she would not entering. You know what they will do to me if I disobey protocol.” he stood straight, his eyes locked on the horizon.
Freya lashed out at him, “You dare prevent a wolf from seeing its alpha when you're human!!”
The boy touched the gun in his belt holster, “it's laced with wolf's bane, and I'm yet to shift.”
Odessa sensed Freya's frustration. She knew from her friend's attitude that a wolf's anger is a force to be reckoned with. Her mother always told her bedtime stories about the different types of wolves and the intensity of their anger.
A maid emerged from inside and whispered to the boy. The boy nodded, and the maid went back inside.
“You may go in, both of you.”
Freya clenched her fists, her eyes narrowed.
“You have to let it go,” Odessa whispered to her.
They both walked into the Alphas lodge. They heard noise from the backyard. Freya held Odessa's hands as they walked to the backyard.
They saw naked bodies, seven of them. The alpha is standing before it with some noble members of the pack.
Odessa's hands flew to her mouth, her pacing reduced.
“They already know,” Freya's eyes widened.
Odessa glanced at the bodies, she saw the same circular tear on their chests.
“But why on their chests?” She asked in her thoughts.
Odessa raised an eyebrow when she saw her father whispering to the Alpha. She wished she could hear what they were muttering.
Someone taps Odessa from behind, and she shudders. She spins around, only to meet Akira.
“I saw you two at the gate. I'm really sorry for the embarrassment. George is something else, he always goes by the book.”
“You should talk to him, but it's fine. It's bygone now” Freya leans closer and whispers “what about their families? These dead wolves and their families should be here.”
“They're not from our pack, none of them have our crescent mark.”
Odessa inhaled sharply. She wondered why injured members of another pack would want to reach out to them.
“How did they even get here?” Odessa asked.
“Through the narrow route, they howled and made their way to our backyard, they just shifted back and died. No one knows the cause of their death yet”
“Or which pack they belong to,” Odessa completed.
Akira sees the cloth tied to her arms, “what happened to you?”
“We saw other victims in the woods,” Freya disclosed.
Odessa looked around, she remembered the words of the child to her, it became clear to her that the threat was not just to their pack alone but to the twelve packs.
“But what was the beacon drawing them to the king's Pack before their deaths?” She asked in her thoughts.
She sighted Ryker, who had been staring at her from a distance. They both smiled at each other.
She walked out without the knowledge of Freya and Akira, who were engrossed in their discussion.
She was walking towards Ryker when her brother Samson emerged from nowhere and stood before her. The smile on her face disappeared, her face fell instantly.
“Mother has been looking for you.”
“I thought it was father.”
“Both of them!” Samson dragged her out like she had no say.
Some able men walked in and began carrying the bodies to the healing hut.
“We must send word to the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack. He should know that seven members of his pack have fallen, and we extend our condolences” Alpha Luca King held Becket's hands.
“He might think you did it.”
Alpha Luca's eyes widened in disbelief. “But I didn't.”
“It may not matter,” Kai added.
“Set up a meeting, now!!!. I want all council members at the council hall now!!!”
Alpha Luca went back to his bedchamber. He paced around, he was worried about the implications of Blackwood's wolves dying in his compound. Beckett was right, they could think he did it, they could think he had broken the treaty.
“Now is not the time for war,” he thought to himself.
Ryker was coming out of the bathroom when he heard someone knock. He had his yellow towel wrapped around his waist.
“Come in,” he said, despite smelling who it was.
Freya walked in, and her mouth opened in disbelief.
“You knew it was me, you could smell my scent.”
“My maids would never let you come into my bedchamber, and yet here you are.”
Water dripped on the floor as Ryker approached her. Her heart began pounding.
“You cannot mate with Odessa.”
Ryker's eyes widened and he chuckled in laughter. He held up her jaw and slowly massaged her cheeks.
“Let me guess, you think you mean something to me.”
Freya stared at his broad shoulders, his n*****s right before her. She was lost in thoughts. He looked into her eyes and saw her vulnerability. He moved his lips against hers, her mouth opened to his, and a soft moan escaped her lips as Ryker's hands roamed her back, pulling her closer.
As they broke apart for air, Ryker's eyes burned with desire, and yet he chuckled. “Why exactly are you doing this?”
Freya's moans grew louder, she tried kissing him back, but he placed one of his fingers on her lips.
“Easy love, answer the question.”
“She doesn't love you like I love you, she is only paying obedience to her father, Beckett” she replied firmly.
He took a step back and shook his head from side to side. He stared at her for a while.
“Odessa and I love each other, duty or otherwise.”
She chuckled, “She loves someone else. I saw her kiss someone today.”
Ryker was dumbfounded, he couldn't believe her words. He rushed to her and held her neck tightly.
“You're lying!”
“I'm not. You can ask her if she kissed someone today could she is not a good liar.”
He released his hands from her neck and looked away.
Freya slowly touched his cheeks, “You’ve made love to me before. I'm surprised at your sudden devotion to a girl who doesn't care about you.”
He removed her hands from his cheeks and whispered softly, “We had s*x, young lady. It is different from making love.”
She smiled and whispered in his ear, “Tomorrow, she will be your mate. All we have is today. I want you to devour me”
He looked into her eyes, the pain of Odessa kissing another clenched in. He leaned her on the wall and let his towel fall, he tore her clothes with his bare hands and noticed the fabric tied to her arms.
“Ignore that,” she whispered.
He held her face tightly, he slowly kissed her neck and then stopped. He caressed her n*****s, pointing right before him.
Odessa climbed to the window and saw her best friend naked before Ryker. Her clothes littered the floor. Neither of them could smell her; their minds were distracted by the passion between them.
She had come to surprise him and tell him all the funny discussions she had with her mother. Seeing Freya and Ryker in such a state broke her to pieces.
Ryker kissed her passionately, he sensed her desire. His hands slowly went between her legs, and he felt the warmth between her legs, the wetness that betrayed her arousal.
Tears rolled down Odessa's eyes as Ryker pushed Freya to his bed. Ryker kissed her neck and slowly used his tongue to lick her belly down to her belly button. His tongue slowly went down further as Freya moaned.
“Please don't stop,” she pleaded.
Odessa felt her throat closing up, she was finding it difficult to breathe, she began wheezing.
Ryker heard the wheezing sound and turned to his window.
