The pull of the bond

746 Words
ZANDER The scent of pinewood and sharp rain still clung faintly to the sheets of our shared office couch. I’d napped here after a long meeting with our enforcers, too restless to go back to our room. Not until we made it hers, too. Cassidy. Her name echoed through every bond we shared, filling the spaces left hollow by Lyra’s loss. It had taken months to stabilize the pack after the death of our first mate, and even longer to believe the Moon Goddess would ever offer us another chance. But now, she was here — fragile, recovering, strong in ways we couldn’t begin to understand — and everything was different. ZAYDEN I tapped my pen against the surface of the war table, eyes scanning the patrol logs. “We’ve got a weak spot along the east ridge,” I muttered, but my thoughts were already drifting. Cassidy was six weeks postpartum. The baby, Zack, had started to open his eyes and smile. Ellie ran the halls with Zarina like she’d lived here her whole life. Every time I caught Cassidy rocking Zack by the fireplace or humming softly as she brushed Ellie’s hair, I felt something primal stir — not just protective instinct, but devotion. Craving. The clove and smoke of my own scent thickened around me as the mate bond flared again. She still didn’t fully understand what the bond meant, but it was there. Growing. Calling. ZAVIER I leaned back in my chair, lacing my fingers behind my head. “We need to start preparing the room.” Zander and Zayden looked up, both immediately understanding. “Our room,” I clarified. “She needs to be with us. She’s still sleeping in the guest suite with the kids — but she’s ours. We can’t keep pretending like the bond isn’t pulling tighter every day.” Zander nodded slowly. “She’s just been through so much. I don’t want to pressure her. But… I feel it, too.” “So do I,” Zayden added, quieter. “Even when we’re not touching her. Even from across the room.” The three of us were born as one — three bodies, one soul divided by the Moon Goddess. It made sense that we would love as one, too. We’d mourned Lyra together. We’d buried her together. And now we were healing together, piece by piece, because of Cassidy. ZANDER “We’ll make the room feel like hers,” I said finally. “No pressure. No rush. But she needs to know she’s welcome. That this is her home.” “I’ll talk to mom,” Zayden said. “She’ll take the little ones while we… clean up the room. Fresh sheets, candles, space for her books. Anything that feels like her.” “And we’ll move the crib next to our bed,” Zavier added. “So Zack can sleep next to us” ZAYDEN Running the pack had its demands. The border tension with the Bloodpine wolves hadn’t eased. One of our scouts had been injured last week. We needed to decide whether to send a message or tighten security again. But none of that felt more urgent than Cassidy. We were Alphas. Warriors. Leaders. But right now, we were men in love with a woman who had survived something none of us could fathom. A woman carrying wounds far deeper than the flesh. And somehow, we were part of her healing. And she — she was part of ours. ZAVIER Later that night, after the council meeting ended and Amelia had taken Ellie and Zack upstairs, the three of us stood in the doorway of our massive shared bedroom. The bed spanned the width of the room — a custom design made back when we’d first claimed Lyra. Now, it would hold the future. I lit the sandalwood-scented candles by the wall, their flickering light throwing soft shadows over the plush navy blankets we’d replaced. Her favorite. “I’ll talk to her,” Zander said. “Tomorrow. Gently. No pressure. Just… an invitation.” I nodded. “The bond’s already speaking to her. We just need to give her space to listen.” Zayden stepped forward, pressing a hand over his heart. “She saved our hearts when we didn’t think they could beat for anyone again.” And now, we would show her — slowly, patiently — that this pack, this house, this bed, and this bond, were hers to claim
