Really is just the beginning

The soft hum of fluorescent lights overhead buzzed steadily, a quiet background to the storm of emotions brewing inside Cassidy. She sat upright in the hospital bed, her arms curled protectively around baby Zack, his tiny body wrapped snugly against her chest. The discharge papers lay signed on the table, and the nurse had already removed her IVs. After everything—after the pain, the blood, the fear—she was finally going home. Not just with Zack, but with a new beginning. The door creaked open gently, and the familiar scent of pinewood and sharp rain filled the room first, followed swiftly by warm clove and smoke, and sandalwood laced with lightning. Her senses picked up each of the Alpha brothers before she even saw them. She’d grown used to their presence, the way their scents grounded her, whether she fully understood the mate bond or not. Zander stepped in first, a gentle but steady presence, his amber eyes instantly scanning her face, then the baby. Zayden followed, a softness to his expression that belied his intimidating frame, while Zavier brought up the rear, his gaze warm and curious, cradling a baby blanket under one arm. “You ready to blow this popsicle stand?” Zavier teased gently, but Cassidy only gave him a tired smile. “I think so,” she murmured, her voice still a bit hoarse from everything her body had endured. “You look good,” Zayden said sincerely, his eyes flicking to Zack. “You’re strong, Cassidy.” She didn’t feel strong. Her body was sore in ways she hadn’t known possible. The emergency C-section left a searing line of pain across her belly, and she was still processing what it meant to be marked by the brothers—the three of them—when they’d done it to save her life. She hadn’t had time to dwell on the meaning, not when her newborn son was still fighting in the NICU. But today, he was well enough to come home. Cassidy’s heart clenched as a nurse wheeled in a stroller with a carseat. One of the NICU nurses smiled kindly, crouching next to her. The nurse took her and put the baby in the dark blue carrier. “He’s doing great, Cassidy. A real little fighter. You’ve got yourself a strong boy.” Cassidy nodded, blinking hard. She’d cried enough in the last few weeks to fill a river, but somehow the tears still came. She glanced at the brothers, unsure who should push him. Zander quietly stepped forward, as if reading her mind. “May I?” he asked. She nodded, and Zander gently pushed the carrier/stroller Combo. careful and reverent, like he held a piece of the moon in his hands. Cassidy saw the way his expression softened as he looked down at Zack. The other two stood close, peeking over his shoulder. Zayden gently touched her shoulder. “We’ve got you. We’ll get everything in the car. Just lean on us.” Cassidy stood slowly, pain tugging with every movement, her body still adjusting to being post-pregnancy. Zavier was there instantly, offering her his arm. “Let’s take it slow,” he murmured. The triplets flanked her on all sides as they moved through the hall, nurses smiling and whispering in their wake. Cassidy didn’t care. For the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel alone. The pack house—or mansion, as Cassidy still preferred to call it—stood tall in the distance as the car wound up the long drive. Even though she had been there once before, everything felt new again with Zack in her arms. Waiting outside were Zaylen and Zarina, bouncing on their toes with excitement. Ellie clung to Amber, who hovered protectively behind the children, her expression soft but distant. Cassidy’s chest tightened. So much healing still to be done—not just for her, but for all of them. “Mommy!” Ellie cried, breaking away and toddling toward her. Cassidy bent—wincing—just in time to scoop Ellie into her free arm. Zack shifted slightly in his carrier, but didn’t fuss. Zaylen stepped closer, his eyes wide as he looked into the carrier. “Can I call him my brother?” Cassidy blinked, overwhelmed by the way he’d said “our.” “Yes,” she whispered. “Zack has the best big brother,” Zarina stood next to Zaylen, her small hand touching the side of the carrier. “He’s really small.” Cassidy chuckled softly. “He’ll grow fast.” Zayden knelt beside them. “You guys want to help us take care of him?” Zaylen and Zarina nodded solemnly. Zavier grinned. “You’ve got the best big siblings in the world, Zack. Don’t let them spoil you too much.” The pack house doors opened behind them, and Cassidy caught a glimpse of the former Alpha and Luna—Zane and Amelia-watching the scene with quiet approval. Amelia’s eyes sparkled with unshed tears. “I’ll take Ellie in,” Amber said, stepping forward. Her voice had a slight tremor, but her smile was genuine. “You should rest, Cass. We’ll settle everything inside.” Cassidy leaned her head against Zander’s shoulder. “I don’t know how to thank you.” Zander looked down at her, his voice low and steady. “You don’t have to thank us. You’re ours, Cassidy. And Zack is, too. We meant what we said. We’ll love him as our own.” Zayden reached over and brushed a stray curl from her face. “This is just the beginning.” Cassidy looked at her babies—Ellie in Amber’s arms and Zack nestled safely in Zander’s—and for the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to believe it. This really was just the beginning.
