A new beginning

The sunlight hit Cassidy’s skin for the first time in weeks as she stepped outside the hospital, Ellie snuggled securely in her arms. The warm air was a stark contrast to the sterile chill of her hospital room, and for a moment, she had to pause and soak it all in. Her daughter’s tiny fingers clutched at her shirt, her brown curls gleaming under the light. Cassidy pressed a kiss to the top of Ellie’s head, feeling the toddler’s familiar weight soothe some of the lingering tremors in her heart. Zayden, ever the gentle one of the triplets, moved to her side. “You okay?” he asked softly, his warm amber eyes scanning her face for any sign of discomfort. “I think so,” she said quietly, still overwhelmed. “It’s just… strange. To be out. Free.” Zander and Zavier waited by the black SUV, the door already open, the plush seats prepped with a car seat for Ellie. Despite how identical the three of them looked—tall, powerfully built, with sharp-cut jaws and deep brown hair—she was slowly learning to tell them apart. Zander carried the scent of pine and rain, Zayden had a warmth like cinnamon and clove, and Zavier, the most intense of them, was marked by a sandlewood with hints of leather. She didn’t fully understand the way their scents affected her—it was tied to something primal, instinctive—but she knew enough to realize it had something to do with the bond they claimed existed between them. The drive to the pack house—the mansion—was silent at first. Cassidy looked out the window, her hand absently stroking Ellie’s back while her mind spun. When the SUV turned onto a long, tree-lined driveway, her breath caught in her throat. The mansion was sprawling, majestic even, built of dark stone and wood that gave it a sense of power and legacy. Ivy curled up along parts of the façade, and balconies overlooked a wide circular courtyard filled with flowers and patrolling warriors. “This is home?” she whispered, unsure if she meant it as a question or a prayer. “It’s your home now, too,” Zander said from the driver’s seat. They were waiting at the front steps: two regal figures, both bearing the same sharp features as the brothers. The former Alpha, with silver brushed at his temples, still stood with his shoulders squared and his gaze alert. He introduced himself as Alpha Zarek, his voice deep and commanding, though his eyes softened when he looked at Ellie in Cassidy’s arms. Beside him stood the former Luna, a graceful woman with the name Amelia and a soothing smile that reminded Cassidy painfully of what a mother’s love could look like. “It’s an honor to meet you, Cassidy,” Amelia said, reaching gently for Ellie’s chubby hand. “We’ve heard a lot about your strength. And your daughter is beautiful.” Cassidy nodded shyly, unsure how to respond to so much kindness all at once. “Thank you. She’s… everything.” Inside the mansion, Cassidy found herself stunned by how warm and lived-in it felt despite its grandeur. Plush rugs softened hardwood floors, and large windows spilled golden light into every corner. Family portraits lined the halls, and the scent of herbs and fresh bread wafted from the kitchen. Zaylen and Zarina bounded down the stairs, their excitement already bubbling. Zarina had a picture she’d drawn—of Cassidy, Ellie, and the baby in her belly—while Zaylen proudly offered to show her and Ellie the nursery upstairs. “You guys already met in the hospital,” Zavier reminded them, laughing. Zarina huffed dramatically. “But now she’s home!” Home. That word stuck in Cassidy’s mind as they showed her to her room—though “room” didn’t seem like a strong enough word. It was a suite: a four-poster bed with soft gray and lavender bedding, a sitting area with a rocking chair, and another smaller bed already set up for Ellie. Gifts had been placed gently around the room: books, clothes, plush toys.
