A ghost between us

783 Words
Midnight Howlers POV Cassidy stirred in the infirmary bed, and the world shifted again. For ten years, Zander, Zayden, and Zavier had lived under the ghost of the same woman. Her name had been Lyra — fierce, radiant, and the rarest of blessings. She’d been their fated mate, shared by all three brothers, bonded in a sacred triad that few could ever understand. And then she was gone. Taken in a blaze of war and betrayal. Zander had been the first to fall to silence. Zayden turned rage into control. Zavier, the youngest, carried the weight of keeping their children — Zaylen and Zerina — safe and whole. But none of them had ever really healed. Now, here was this human. Unconscious. Scarred. Bleeding from wounds that no woman — human or wolf — should have survived. And yet she lived. And inside her, the life she carried pulsed with alpha blood. A life that had no right existing… and yet it did. ⸻ Zander stood closest to the bed, arms rigid at his sides, staring down at her pale face. “She’s starting to stir,” he murmured, voice hoarse. “Heartbeat’s stronger. She’s fighting.” Zayden rubbed the bridge of his nose, tension thick in his posture. “She shouldn’t be able to carry a child like that. Not a human. Not unless…” “Unless fate had a cruel sense of humor,” Zavier said softly from the window. “She smells like pain,” Zaylen’s small voice broke the silence. All three alphas turned to find the boy standing in the doorway. He had Lyra’s eyes — silver-blue, stormy with emotion. Zerina clung to his hand, peeking past his arm with quiet curiosity. “We told you to stay upstairs,” Zander said, though there was no bite in his voice. “We wanted to see her,” Zerina said simply. “She smells like hope.” That struck something deep in Zayden’s chest. “She’s been through hell,” Zavier murmured. “But she still holds on.” Zander finally nodded, eyes still locked on Cassidy. “She hasn’t let go of that baby. Not once. Even with the damage Carl did… she fought.” “She whispered a name,” Zayden added. “Ellie. Probably her daughter.” “Where is the girl?” Zaylen asked. “With the rescued children, three floors up,” Zavier said. “She’s safe. But I’m not sure Cassidy knows that yet.” There was a long, heavy silence. Only the gentle beeping of machines filled the room. “Do you feel it?” Zander asked, voice low. “Yes,” Zayden answered. Zavier didn’t speak, but his eyes said the rest. That pull. The strange ache. The whisper in their wolves. It wasn’t the same as Lyra. No one could replace her. But something in Cassidy called to a part of them that had been long dead. A second chance. A possibility they’d never believed in. “She’ll never replace her,” Zayden said under his breath. “But maybe…” “Maybe we weren’t meant to die with Lyra,” Zander finished. A soft rustle drew their attention — Cassidy’s hand twitched, her brows furrowed. “Cassidy?” Zavier stepped closer, voice calm and low. “You’re safe now. You’re not alone.” Her eyes fluttered weakly, dry lips parting. “Ellie…” she whispered, tears already pooling in the corners of her eyes. Zander leaned in. “She’s safe. You’re in our pack now.” Zaylen stepped closer, unable to help himself. “Is she going to be our new mom?” The room went still. Zander’s jaw tensed. “Zaylen—” Cassidy let out a shaky breath. Her eyes blinked toward the boy’s voice. Then toward Zerina, whose little fingers wrapped around Cassidy’s own. “You’re safe now,” Zerina whispered, her words like a promise. Cassidy smiled faintly — cracked, tired, but real. Then, just as quickly, her body trembled and she slipped back into sleep. “She’s not done fighting,” Zavier said softly. “She just needs time.” ⸻ In the hallway, the brothers stood side by side. Zander looked toward the ceiling. “Lyra… if you’re watching, I hope you understand.” Zayden stared at his reflection in the glass. “We weren’t looking for this.” Zavier closed his eyes. “But maybe she was sent to us — not to replace you. But to remind us how to live again.” Behind the glass, Cassidy slept — the baby inside her strong, full of alpha blood. And maybe, just maybe, the future had found its way back to them.
