Chapter Six Brady glanced from the ring in the black velvet jewelry box on the kitchen counter to the clock on the stove. It was now after eleven. He stared at the sandwich he’d made for Cassie, still sitting on its plate. His cell phone was lying beside it, the screen black even though he expected it to ring anytime. He willed it to ring. “Cassie, where are you?” He fisted his hand and hit the counter, but it did nothing to take the edge off his worry. He finally reached for the plate, opened the fridge, and slid the sandwich inside on the top shelf beside the peanut butter and half a block of cheddar, then reached over his shoulder and neck and pulled at the tension there.
