Chapter Twenty
“I was very surprised to receive your call,” Elijah said over dinner the following night.
Lacie had asked him to meet her at the hotel because it was the least amount of effort and she didn’t want there to be any confusion that this was a fancy date or anything of that sort. They had gotten through the awkward first drink and the starter. The entrée in front of her didn’t appear to be appetizing, but food had lost its taste the minute she heard Ryder was AWOL.
“I just needed a friend,” she said, using the kidnapper’s line because she was too tired to come up with her own. “I’ve been… struggling for a few days.”
