Chapter 4 The bright lights shined down on the field. We had just arrived at the game. I told Jack’s parents I was going to look for Sabrina. They wave me off and tell me that when the game ends to just meet them at the car. I walk around looking for Sabrina. I finally find her and she pulls my arm and wants to dish. “What did Kyle want this morning” she bugs. “Just said I looked nice and asked if I was coming tonight” Sabrina looks at my like I’m full of s**t. “What?” I chuckle. “Just be careful, please. I don’t like the timing of this. “She makes her concerns known. “Okay B... I gotta tell you something. But Monica can’t know and neither can Zach.” I caution. “Cross my heart” I look at her as she responds and I look around. There are too many people around so I pull her to the gate that enclosed the field where no one was around. I spill the gist of my dream. “But wait, who was it?” I looked at her with the guiltiest look I could make. “Molly. You need to tell Jack how you feel. He has no idea what is going on with you.” I looked at her not wanting to hear what she had to say. “B, he asked me to meet at our spot and stood me up. I have no interest in what he has to say and nor do I care about his opinion on any matter. Besides he has someone. I am the least of his concerns. I see the way she looks at me and I know she doesn’t like me.” Sabrina looked around aware that I was right. “You know Brittney isn’t a bad person. She is quite nice. Maybe if you got to know her… “I cut her off “I have no interest in knowing anything about his newest flavor of the week. He is not a serious relationship kind of guy. He never has been. I’m not wasting my time: Click Click Click Click We look to our side and see the football team jogging from the school to the field. Here we go I think to myself. When the team reaches the gate the crowd roars with cheers. Sabrina spots Zach and I knew I could disappear from the action without being seen. I turn around to go as far away as I can get when I feel someone grab my wrist. I turn to see who it is. I look down and see a male hand. I look up not knowing who to expect and it was Kyle. I looked at him and smiled. “Hey” I greet him. “You’re not leaving, are you?” he pleads. Knowing what I wanted to do and knowing what was going to happen were two different things. I look around to see who is within ear shot and notice Jack. “No, I am not leaving. Just wanted to get a front row seat” I flirt. Kyle looks around and sees Jack seething and winks at me. “Good” he leaves me with. Sabrina had caught the tail end of my conversation with Kyle/ “Good? What’s good?” she pokes. “Nothing he just asked if I was leaving and I said no” She grabs me as we start to walk to the chest level fence line the separated the field from the bleachers. We stood there the whole game. Watching the guys play like I was used to doing my whole life. I kept going through my limited interactions with Kyle in my head. What did he mean by “good” and “that’s not why I’m nervous”. Was this his attempt at flirting with me? I decide to let the thoughts go thinking I am reading too much into it. Before I know it, its half time. The cheerleaders run out to the field and perform their competition routine. Sabrina and I are singing and dancing to the songs to the track. I hear laughter. Without skipping a beat, I turned my head continuing to dance and see Kyle and Zach staring at us. I smile at Kyle and wave. Buzz Buzz SMS: From Mrs. Beth Since when do you and Kyle talk? Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone. Just promise me you will be careful. I look up into the stands and see Mrs. Beth looking at me. I smile and nod my head. Buzz Buzz SMS: From Mrs. Beth I’m here for you always I smile and form a heart with my hands for her. She had always been like a second mom to me. I was the only girl between her and my mom. So, I was always treated differently. But knowing she had my back made me feel safe. TOOT The whistle blows. The game had ended and we won. Looked like our freshman team was better than our varsity team. I look back to locate Jack’s parents and see them walking towards the parking lot. I nod knowing what needs to be done next. Zach comes up “Hey walk with me” Sabrina giggles and complies. I giggle and try to locate Jack just to tell him to meet us by the car. Before I can find him, Kyle comes up to me. “Hey lucky charm” he shouts. I look at him confused. He presents his hand to me. I think I’m supposed to grab it, so I lift my hand to meet his. I see we are walking towards the school so the team can get their things. “Great Job tonight.” I congratulate him on the win. “Thanks. Can I be honest with you” he quickly remarks. I stop in my tracks and look at him. “I mean if you want to” I giggle. “He grabs my other hand as he faces me. “I was nervous you weren’t going to be here” Confused by his confession “What do you mean?” “I play well when you are here. When you don’t make a game, I play shit.” He pauses “You’re my lucky charm” Now the comment made sense. I can feel my face blushing. He smiles. We resume walking to the school. We walk in silence just enjoying the nice fall breeze. We make it to the doors. “Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow in class.” I say sheepishly. He looks at me and holds out his arms for a hug. So, I step in not knowing what to expect. I mainly felt his shoulder pads in the hug. I giggle. “What?” he quickly pulls back in concern. I put my hand on hi shoulder “This is a great hug blocker” I tease. “Wait for me?” he says. I look at him “Sure. I got to wait for Jack anyways. His parents gave me a ride to the game.” His smirk falls. Why do Jack and Kyle hate each other so much? Once the crowd clears of football players, all that’s left outside is Sabrina and I. She continues with her warnings and cautions when it comes to Kyle. I’m listening but I can’t help but wonder what if? I decide to throw caution to the wind. I pull out my phone and go to Zach’s messages. Hey give Kyle my number. You owe me and don’t tell Jack. Worried about the position I could be putting Zach in Buzz Buzz I’ll give him your number and I won’t tell Jack… you should though Ignoring his warning. I shake my head and put my phone away. The doors open and the football team floods out. “Can I get another try at that hug?” I hear from behind. I turn around see Kyle in his normal school clothes. He is covered in sweat. I look at him and smile “Yeah you can” I put my arms around his neck and his puts his arms around my waist and we successfully hug. AHEM, I recognized that tone. Kyle and I pull away from the hug and I see Jack to my left. Rolling my eyes at his presence, I turn back to Kyle “I gotta go, see ya tomorrow” We stare into each other’s eyes for a second and then part ways. “What the hell?” Jack demands. “What?” I innocently remark. “Kyle?” He questions. I look at him. The lion, the witch, and the audacity of this b***h. “Brittney?” I match his tone. He looks at me as if he wasn’t expecting my response. He looks away from me and drops his head. The rest of the walk to the car is silent. We get to the car and we greet his parents. After Jack loads his stuff in the trunk, we settle into the back seat and buckle up. Mr. David and Jack talk plays and strategy of the game while his mom and I just let them talk. We pull up to my house. “Here you go Molly” Mr. David says. “Great Job tonight, Jack, Good Night” I bid farewell. I open the door and my dad was waiting for me. Of course. “Hey bud, how was the game?” he greeted me. “Good, they won.” I replied. I walk into the kitchen to get a water and then make my way towards the living room. “Where’s mom?” I ask. “Asleep. She had a really bad migraine. I told her I would stay up and wait for you” I walk up to my dad and lean down to give him a hug and kiss good night. “I’m gonna shower and head to bed. Love you” I turn around to walk towards the stairs. “Night sweetie, glad you had fun tonight” Thinking about Kyle, “Yeah I did.” I get out of the shower and get dressed for bed. I check my phone to see if Sabrina made it home and to my surprise, I see a message from an unknown number Hey Lucky Charm Knowing who it was, I smiled and giggled. Hey Shoulder Pads” I plug my phone and make sure alarms are set for the morning. Buzz Buzz you in bed? Knowing I need to sleep Yeah. Just got out of the shower I lay down and stare at my phone in anticipation Same. Unsure of what to say next. I stare at my phone when another message pops up Does Jack know you told Zach to give you my number Taking a stand once a for all knowing it’ll spread like wildfire tomorrow morning Jack is not the boss of me and he does not dictate who I talk to Proud of myself Kyle responds haha okay Ms. Independent. I giggle. Knock Knock Knock I close my phone “Come in” mom opens the door. “Hey sweetie just wanted to say good night and I love you” “I love you too mom. Good night” she leaves my room and closes the door. Buzz Buzz Guess you fell asleep. Night Lucky Charm. See you tomorrow : ) I smile at my phone. Knowing its probably a mistake I close my phone and with that I close my eyes to see what dreams tonight will bring.
