Mckenzie
After returning home from shopping at the mall, I went to my room to rest for a bit before the birthday party. I closed my eyes and fell asleep. I woke up to hear a knock on my door. I sat up from the bed and opened it to see mum smiling at me. "Are you going to get ready, Mckenzie? Your party starts in an hour. When you're done, come downstairs. I want to speak to you and Theo," she said. I nodded and closed the door to take a shower and get dressed. As I went downstairs to the kitchen, I saw Max and mum together. I was about to leave when Theo entered the room and said, "Finally, we have a dad," while fist-pumping the air.
Max laughed out loud as he said to mum, “It’s better to find out now.” Mum nodded her head with a warm smile and replied, “I have finally accepted Max as my second chance mate,” her gaze lifting to meet his. Theo, unable to contain his excitement, exclaimed, “Yes, we can finally call you dad! We’ve waited a whole year for this.” He turned to me with a grin, and I couldn’t help but smile as well, nodding in agreement at Max and mum.
Feeling playful, I signed to them, “We even placed bets about when mum would finally say yes.” Theo burst into laughter, nodding vigorously. “Yeah, I owe you a hundred bucks!” His laughter was contagious, and soon we were both chuckling while mum stared at us, stunned for a moment before shaking her head in amusement.
The atmosphere was light and cheerful as we shared this long-awaited family moment, one that made everything feel wonderfully complete. Mum and Max exchanged a tender look, and Mum spoke again, breaking the momentary silence, “We should proceed to the pack house for your party,” she said. We had a light meal and then headed to the pack house. As we neared, we saw Luke running towards us. Upon reaching, he charged at me and before I could react, he picked me up and spun me around while singing “Happy birthday”. I couldn't stop laughing. “Luke, put her down; she doesn't need to be dizzy before the party,” Theo intervened. Luke then placed me down and turned towards Theo, who had a panicked expression before bolting towards the house with Luke chasing after him.
Upon entering the house, I observed Luke embracing Theo in a bear hug and twirling him around while singing "Happy Birthday". I sighed as I watched the scene, with Lavender laughing internally, amused by the entire situation. She informed me that she sensed Sunny's annoyance, which caused me to laugh aloud. However, my laughter was interrupted when Uncle Richard entered the room, picked me up, and began spinning me around while singing "Happy Birthday" just like Luke. Aunt Mary then entered the room with Maggie, both wearing similar expressions of disapproval as they shook their heads at Luke and Uncle Richard. "Honey, put her down, you are going to make her sick," Aunt Mary remarked.
"But honey, it's their birthday," Uncle Richard pouted at Aunt Mary, earning a soft chuckle from the group. With his plea, Luke and Uncle Richard reluctantly stopped twirling Theo and me, allowing us to regain our balance. We exchanged amused glances, giggling at their antics as the celebratory atmosphere carried us outside to the backyard.
The pack members were bustling about, setting up the BBQ and grill while the air filled with the mouthwatering aroma of roasted meat and sizzling vegetables. A chorus of cheerful voices greeted us, wishing Theo and me a happy birthday. We grinned widely, feeling the warmth of the community's affection as they handed us thoughtful gifts wrapped in colourful paper. The night grew livelier with laughter, stories, and glowing smiles shared beneath the soft shimmer of fairy lights strung around the yard.
As the celebration continued, I mindlinked Theo, my thoughts laced with concern. "Hey, does your body feel hot? I’m feeling warm and sweaty, and I don’t know what’s happening to me." My words prompted Theo to glance at me, his expression reflecting the same unease. He responded calmly through the mindlink, "Sunny said it’s time to shift."
The realization hit me like a wave, both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. I walked over to Theo, my steps deliberate as my heart raced with anticipation. "Come on," he urged quietly, "let’s go to Mum. It’s about time she knows that we have our wolves." His voice carried a mix of determination and trepidation that mirrored my own emotions. I signed back, hesitant, "Do you think she’ll be happy or worried?" My sigh betrayed my uncertainty, the weight of expectation lingering heavily.
Theo placed a hand on my shoulder, his touch steadying me. "She loves us," he replied with conviction, his words grounding me in the truth we both knew. Together, we stepped away from the crowd, our shared secret about to unfold in the presence of the one person who had always been our pillar of strength.
As Theo and I approached Mum, who stood with Max's arm draped protectively around her shoulders, chatting with Aunt Mary and Uncle Richard, an unexpected wave of heat surged through me. I cast a quick glance at Theo, and his expression mirrored my own—troubled yet resigned.
"Zee, it’s time," Lavender’s voice echoed in my mind, soothing yet firm. "Just relax and don’t fight the shift; it’ll hurt more if you do, okay?" Before I could fully comprehend her words, a sharp, searing pain shot through my leg as it snapped, forcing a scream from deep within me. My vision blurred with tears, and I struggled to control my breathing, focusing on letting the inevitable shift take over.
I staggered as the transformation completed, feeling my senses sharpen, my muscles brimming with newfound power. Theo stood beside me, his wolf form mirroring mine in stature and elegance, a silent yet profound testament to the bond we had always shared. The crowd remained frozen, their faces a mix of awe and disbelief.
I looked down and noticed my paws, pristine white with delicate purple tips glowing softly under the moonlight. Sitting on my haunches, I turned my gaze toward Theo, who stood just as majestic. His wolf mirrored mine in colour, but his features held their own unique brilliance—golden-tipped ears and paws, and a sun-shaped marking on his forehead.
“Your wolf is beautiful, Zee,” Theo mindlinked me, his voice laced with awe. “You carry a moon shape on your forehead, and your ears and paws have purple tips. Even your eyes—they’re an enchanting shade of purple.”
A smile tugged at my lupine features as I responded through the mindlink, “You’re stunning too, Theo. Those golden tips and the sun shape on your forehead suit you perfectly. And your eyes—they shine like liquid gold.”
For a moment, we simply stared at each other, our connection deepened by the silent acknowledgment of what we had become. It felt as though the world fell away, leaving just us in the sanctuary of newly discovered strength and identity. The reflection of our forms in each other’s eyes spoke volumes about the journey we had undertaken—not just individually but together, bound by the unyielding ties of siblinghood and destiny.
The crowd began to stir, murmurs rippling through the gathering as pack members processed the transformation they had just witnessed. Awe, curiosity, and a tinge of reverence coloured their expressions, yet their warmth remained unwavering. Mum stepped forward, her eyes shining with pride and a touch of moisture, Max at her side. She kneeled before us, reaching out a hesitant hand to touch my moon-shaped marking. Her voice trembled with emotion as she whispered, “You’re magnificent—both of you. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Her words anchored me, reminding me that we didn’t need to face this shift alone. Theo moved closer to Mum, nuzzling her gently, his golden eyes shimmering with affection. And as the pack slowly began to encircle us, their joy and acceptance washed over me like a balm. They cheered, the celebratory spirit rekindling as our transformation became a shared milestone, not just for Theo and me but for the entire pack.
Lavender’s voice echoed in my mind as if reading the harmony enveloping us. “See? You were never alone, Zee. This is your family—your life. Embrace it.”
And I knew she was right. Together, Theo and I had stepped into a new chapter, one of strength, unity, and hope—a chapter that intertwined our wolves with the vibrant spirit of the pack around us.
