Serena’s Pov
The following weeks passed in a blur, bringing with frustrations, exhaustion and desperation. Fuss had left for the city and I was fired from my job after Mr Ryan framed me for theft.
Alone and jobless, I fought to make ends meet and tried to push the thoughts of sucide far away from my mind.
With all that was happening I found out I was pregnant. The consequences of the night that happened with fuss and I before he left.
I fell to the bathroom floor, my hands trembling as I held the pregnancy test kit. My world had tilted. How can I bring a child into this world—my world? I could barely feed, or take care of myself and my mum. Tears dripped down my eyes as I cried silently.
After a few hours of curling myself on the bathroom floor, I stood up as I rubbed
my flat stomach. I stared at myself in the mirror.
“Hey…little one, how are you? I promise you to protect you from the dangers of life, no matter what.” I said to myself, making a vow not to do anything that would bring harm to my child.
……………..
Four Years Later
Life had changed a lot from what it was before. Liam was the light of my life. The only person who was keeping me going. I had to do lots of side business to keep us from starving or to ensure we had a roof over our heads but most of the time, due to my mothers illness or Liam’s growth, the bills almost drove me over the edge.
During one of my deliveries of my pastries was where I met Milliton.
“Mum….I have to go do some delivery for the Herdinberg’s mansion….please look after Liam and take your medications.” I said to her as she and Liam were both seated in the couch.
“You can go….i got everything handled.” Mum said to me with a smile, I returned it back and tuned to leave, “what about fuss….have you heard anything from him.”
I paused and my heart began to beat so hard against my rib cage. I turned back, “Mum… I don't want to talk about this.” I grabbed the cart filled with different pastries, “I’m heading out!”
The sky was cold as I draped my coat and pushed the cart to Herdinberg’s mansion.
Thirty minutes later
I was standing in front of the huge gate which was like heaven's gate. I pressed the bell in front of me and a voice came from the bell, asking for my information which I gave to them and a few seconds later, the gate was opened and I pushed the cart in.
The mansion was bigger than a football field.
“Welcome ma…..” the voice of the butler brought me back to my reality.
“Are you….?”
“Yes, I am master Kon, the person who spoke to you on the phone. Now please let's get this to the kitchen, it is almost time for breakfast for master Millton.”
“Yes sir….” I said
The maids and I began offloading the cart gently. The pastries in there were enough to feed a family of three.
After offloading, the butler told me to wait in the main hall for my payment but something caught my attention and I wandered off.
I stood at the staircase, staring at the glistening painting hanging on the wall, ever so delicate. The painting tells stories of the suffering of man and it captivated me.
“I also love that painting!” A voice said behind me, startling me.
I turned around with my head bowed, “I'm so sorry…i shouldn't have wandered around. I…I .”
I looked up and to my surprise it was the man who was offering me help when my mum was hospitalized.
“You….”
His poker face made me flinch as I bowed my head, “I better get going. Sorry for wandering about.”
I ran down the stairs, I took my payment and practically ran out of the house.
What’s with the cold shoulder? Wasn't he the person who offered to help me in the hospital but I refused? Probably, must have mistaken him for someone else.
I shrugged, “I don't care who is who as long as I get paid.”
As I walked away from the mansion, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I had just made a fool of myself. Who was that man, and why did he seem so familiar? I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on the payment in my hand. It was a good amount, and it would help me cover some of the bills that were piling up.
I made my way back home, lost in thought. When I arrived, my mom was sitting on the couch, watching Liam play with his toys.
"Hey, how was your delivery?" she asked, looking up at me.
"It was fine," I replied, handing her the payment. "I got paid, and I even saw a familiar face."
My mom raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Who was it?"
I hesitated, unsure if I should mention the man's name. "Just someone I met at the hospital a few years ago," I said finally.
My mom's expression turned curious, but she didn't press the issue. Instead, she asked me about my day, and we spent the rest of the afternoon chatting and laughing together.
As the day drew to a close, I realized that I had forgotten all about the strange encounter at the mansion. But as I was getting ready for bed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that my life was about to change in ways I couldn't imagine.
The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day. I got Liam dressed and fed, and then helped my mom with her morning routine.
As we were finishing up, the doorbell rang. I wiped my hands on my apron and made my way to the door.
When I opened it, I was surprised to see the butler from the Herdinberg mansion standing on my porch.
"Good morning, Miss Serena," he said, bowing slightly. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."
I shook my head, curious about what he wanted. "No, not at all. What brings you here?"
The butler handed me a small envelope. "Master Millton would like to see you again. He requests your presence at the mansion at 2 pm today."
I took the envelope, feeling a flutter in my chest. What could Master Millton want with me?
"I'll be there," I said finally, trying to sound calm.
The butler nodded and turned to leave. "I'll make sure to inform Master Millton. Good day, Miss Serena."
As I watched him walk away, I couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead.
What did Master Millton want from me? And why did I get the feeling that my life was about to change forever?
