Chapter 3: Office Tension

678 Words
Ariana walked into the office the next morning, her heels clicking softly against the polished floors. The air smelled of coffee and ambition, a scent that had always seemed intimidating, but today it felt suffocating. Her chest tightened as her eyes instinctively searched for him—Ethan. He was already there, leaning against the corner of the conference room, reviewing a tablet. The sunlight glinted off his sharp features, highlighting the cold precision in his gaze. Ariana froze, a pang of unease hitting her like ice. Her fingers itched to type, to hide, to disappear altogether. She reminded herself: He rejects it. He rejects me. I can’t let this shake me. Taking a deep breath, she moved toward her desk, careful not to meet his eyes. But the universe had other plans. “Good morning,” he said, voice low, deliberate. Just like that, the room seemed smaller, tighter, air heavier. “Good morning,” she replied softly, forcing a calm she did not feel. He didn’t move from his spot, but his gaze followed her like a shadow, scanning her posture, her every gesture. The tension was palpable, like electricity waiting to spark. Ariana swallowed. Her first task was a simple report—but every glance in Ethan’s direction made her heart race. She wasn’t sure if it was fear, irritation, or something far more confusing. The office seemed alive with whispers. Colleagues glanced at her with curiosity, some with sympathy, others with the unmistakable thrill of gossip. The CEO’s new employee… his wife… but he rejects her. By mid-morning, a minor crisis erupted in the marketing department. A client had changed the order last minute, and panic rippled through the office. Ariana’s instincts kicked in. She moved to assist, her mind focused on the problem rather than him. Ethan arrived moments later. His presence alone brought the room to silence. He took the lead, issuing commands with precision and authority. Ariana noted every motion, every word, careful to match his pace without overstepping. After the chaos settled, he approached her desk. “You handled yourself better than I expected,” he said, voice neutral but tinged with something she couldn’t place—approval? Or merely acknowledgment? “Thank you,” she said, keeping her tone professional. Inside, her heart skipped a beat. Don’t read too much into it, she reminded herself. Lunch was another battlefield. She tried to eat quickly, alone, in the small corner cafeteria. Ethan sat at a nearby table, intentionally positioned so she could see him, but far enough to avoid suspicion. His eyes occasionally flicked toward her, calculating, sharp. Ariana caught herself looking back, and for a fleeting second, she imagined he was different—warm, approachable, maybe even… human. She shook the thought away. It was dangerous. The afternoon dragged on, filled with minor conflicts, whispered instructions, and a steady undercurrent of unspoken tension. Every time she filed a report or answered a question, his eyes were on her. Judging. Testing. Rejecting. At home that evening, the quiet was no relief. Her mother fretted over her meals, her father lectured her about patience and resilience. And still, that text from Ethan lingered in her mind: Do not disappoint me tomorrow. Ariana felt the weight of it settle over her chest like a physical burden. But beneath the weight, something else stirred. A spark of intrigue she could not—and would not—admit to herself. That night, as she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, she imagined him in the office: poised, commanding, impossibly infuriating. She felt the undeniable pull of tension—equal parts fear, irritation, and… something else. Her phone buzzed again. Another text. Just two words: Meet me. Her heart leapt, then plummeted. Where? Why? Her mind raced. Tomorrow promised another day of office challenges, whispered rumors, and the ever-present shadow of the man who rejected it. And Ariana realized, with a mix of dread and anticipation, that surviving him—and resisting him—was going to be far more complicated than she ever imagined.
