Chapter 16: Secrets in the Rain

579 Words
The streets were slick with rain as Ariana gripped the steering wheel, headlights reflecting off puddles. She hadn’t meant to meet Ethan tonight, but his sudden message—I need you. Now.—had left her no choice. When she arrived at the park near the river, she found him waiting, coat drenched, hair clinging to his forehead. The soft hum of the city felt miles away; here, it was just the rain, the river, and them. “You came,” he said, voice low and rough, dripping with emotion. “I…” she faltered. “I had to. But—” Before she could finish, a branch snapped underfoot. Ethan’s head whipped around, tense, alert. Ariana’s pulse raced—not just from the danger, but from the nearness of him. “You’re reckless,” he said, stepping closer, rain soaking them both. “You could’ve gotten hurt.” “I’m not afraid,” she said, meeting his gaze. “Not with you here.” His expression darkened, and for a moment, Ariana saw the vulnerability beneath his controlled exterior. “You think you can handle everything,” he said, voice cracking slightly, “but some things… even you can’t protect.” Ariana’s chest tightened. She knew he was thinking of her stepmother, of her fragile position, of the deal that had bound them together. “I have to try,” she said firmly, though her heart was pounding. “I can’t let anyone—anyone—down.” Ethan’s hand found hers, gripping tightly. Sparks shot through her, impossible to ignore. “Ariana… look at me,” he said, voice almost a growl. “I don’t care about anything else tonight. Just… me.” Her breath caught. She wanted to close the distance, to give in to the pull between them, but the shadow of duty hovered. Before she could respond, her phone buzzed violently. A message from the hospital: Emergency. Step-mother’s treatment critical. Ariana’s knees almost buckled. “I… I have to go.” Ethan stepped in front of her, blocking her path, eyes stormy. “Again?” he snapped. “Again you put duty over… us?” “I… I can’t ignore her! She… she depends on me!” Ariana’s voice shook. “Do you ever consider me?” he shot back. “Do you think I don’t care about you, about what we could be?” The tension was unbearable. The rain fell harder, drumming against them, matching the storm inside Ariana’s heart. She wanted to collapse into his arms, to let the night wash away all restraint—but reality clawed at her. Ethan’s eyes softened for just a second, betraying his own restraint. “Ariana… you’re all I’ve wanted. But I can’t force you. I can’t make you choose me over your obligations. All I can do… is wait.” She swallowed hard, torn between desire and duty. “I… I need time,” she whispered. The river reflected the city lights, fragmented like her emotions. The rain soaked them both, but it couldn’t wash away the tension, the longing, the spark that had ignited tonight. As she turned to leave, Ethan called softly, “Ariana… don’t push me away completely. Some fires… can’t be contained forever.” She walked into the rain, her heart torn, knowing tonight had changed everything. Sparks had been lit. Secrets hung in the air. And tomorrow… tomorrow would bring consequences she wasn’t sure she was ready for.
