Audrey promptly sent over the findings.
Lying in the hospital bed, I leafed through the pages of those bank transfer records.
My fingers trembled slightly on the screen, while my heart grew colder by the moment.
It turned out that during the days I endured morning sickness alone,
Alpha Abe had purchased the most luxurious postnatal care centre on the entire commercial street for Alice.
In the surveillance footage, he was seen holding Alice's hand as they toured the centre:
"The rooms are all decorated to your taste, with a dedicated nutritionist planning your meals. You needn't worry about a thing—just focus on your recovery."
Alice tiptoed to place a kiss on his cheek: "You always think of everything."
Meanwhile, my confinement period was spent in a solitary hospital ward.
At the time, he'd said, "It's in the city centre, so I can visit you often."
But now I realise it was so he could be with Alice whenever he pleased.
My phone buzzed. A message from Alpha Abe's mother: "Come to the Mood Star residence. I need to speak with you."
I smiled bitterly. Calling me at this hour could only mean she wanted me to give way to their "true love."
The driver dropped me off at Mood Star Manor, where Alpha Abe and Alice were sitting in the garden having afternoon tea.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns across Alice.
She wore a bespoke maternity gown, elegantly holding a bone china teacup.
Alpha Abe gazed at her tenderly, occasionally offering her a morsel of pastry.
"Alice, do eat more. Your favourite almond cake."
Hearing footsteps, Alice turned her head, a flicker of smugness in her eyes: "Luna Ash has arrived."
She deliberately emphasised the syllable 'Luna', as if reminding me I was no longer worthy of that name.
Alpha Abe's mother shot me a look of utter disdain: "Why are you standing so far away? Come here."
I dragged my still-unhealed leg, approaching step by step.
Each step felt like walking on a knife's edge.
"I hear you've been investigating our Alice?"
Alpha Abe's mother spoke coldly, "And you have the nerve to investigate her?"
I twisted my mouth into a wry smile:
"That's a peculiar thing to say, Mrs Abe. What's wrong with me investigating Alpha Abe's lover?"
"Lover?"
Alice suddenly laughed, her smile tinged with sarcasm. "Luna Ash, you've got it all wrong, haven't you?"
She set down her teacup with grace, her hand resting lightly on her slightly rounded belly:
"Alpha Abe and I truly love each other. You, on the other hand, are merely a substitute for a business alliance."
"That day..."
she continued, her eyes glistening with tears.
"It was an accident. Alpha Abe blames himself terribly, but do you know what? He says it was fate."
"Our child is the true heir to Mood Shadow City."
Alpha Abe's mother patted her hand affectionately: "Alice's right. Your child's nothing but a sickly weakling. Keeping him alive is just a burden."
I suddenly laughed, tears streaming down my face.
So they'd planned everything from the start, and I'd been foolishly taken in.
I stared straight into her eyes. "Are you so certain the child in my womb is Abe's?"
Alice's expression darkened. "What do you mean?"
I took a stack of photographs from my bag and laid them gently on the coffee table.
In the photographs, Alice appeared intimately engaged with various men.
Each photograph was accompanied by a bank transfer record.
"Three years ago, Chairman of a jewellery company, ten million."
I flipped through them one by one. "Two years ago, the heir apparent of a property conglomerate, twenty million."
"And more besides. Shall I continue?"
Alice's hands began to tremble, spilling tea across the table.
Alpha Abe snatched the photographs, his face turning ashen. "These are all forgeries! Alice isn't that sort of person!"
"Fakes?"
I sneered coldly, "You can investigate. Every single transaction is crystal clear."
"You care most about your reputation, don't you? If people found out your daughter-in-law was a..."
"Enough!"
She cut me off sharply. "What do you want?"
I rose to my feet, towering over them:
"I want Alpha Abe's reputation destroyed. I want you stripped of everything."
"You dare!" Alpha Abe's mother sprang to her feet. "I won't let you harm Alpha Abe!"
"Then we'll see," I said, turning to leave, "who gets hurt first."
On the way back to the hospital, I sent Audrey a message:
「Send the files to every media outlet.」
Rain began to fall from the sky. Watching the raindrops strike the car window, I felt an unprecedented calm within me.
This time, I wouldn't show any mercy.
Having chosen betrayal, one should have anticipated this day.
Sitting in the hospital ward, I watched the news flood my phone screen.
The phone rang incessantly, all calls from Alpha Abe.
I glanced at the caller ID, a cold smile curling my lips, and silenced the phone.
The game has only just begun.
Getting impatient already?
