chapter 6

Alpha Abe's mother's voice came through the phone, tinged with an unprecedented vulnerability: "Ash, what on earth do you want?"  I chuckled softly: "Shouldn't you be asking your son that?"  "You!" she drew a deep breath. "Let's talk, shall we?"  Hanging up, I gazed out the window. The sunlight was perfect. How ironic.  Half an hour later, Alpha Abe's mother appeared at the ward door. Her makeup was no longer immaculate, dark circles clearly visible beneath her eyes.  "Ash..." She hesitated, words failing her.  I gestured for her to sit. "No need for formalities. Speak your mind."  Her handbag was clutched so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Could you have those news reports withdrawn?"  "Why?" I tilted my head to look at her. "It's merely the truth."  "Do you know what people are saying out there?"  Her voice began to tremble. "They're saying my son is a murderer, that he doesn't deserve to be in Mood Shadow City..."  "Is that not the case?"  I cut her off. "Didn't your dear son kill his own child with his own hands?"  Abe's mother sprang to her feet: "It was an accident! Alpha Abe he..."  "An accident?"  I sneered coldly.  "Then explain to me why the car suddenly veered towards me? Why did Andy abandon my child during resuscitation?"  "Well..." Her eyes began to dart about.  "And there's more."  I pressed on, "Why did I suddenly lose my fertility? What exactly were those drugs?"  Her face went pale, and she was speechless.  "Weren't you the one who cherished Alice most?"  I asked softly, "Then did you know her true nature?"  I unlocked my phone and played a recording.  It was a conversation between Alice and her lover.  "You fool, you actually believe Alpha Abe loves me?"  Her voice dripped with sarcasm. "He merely wanted to use me to hurt Ash. His abilities are limited, and with Ash stealing all the limelight, his love turned to hatred and vengeance. How utterly ridiculous. I never actually slept with that freeloader. I just used a potion to make him think we had. At first, I was his destined mate, but he despised me for being an omega—useless to his grand ambitions—so he dumped me and shamelessly pursued Ash."  "That boy..."  The man's voice carried a hint of concern.  "Rest assured, the child is yours. He has nothing to do with it."  She chuckled softly, "I have my ways. Once I get Alpha Abe's money, we'll be off to pastures new."  The recording abruptly ended. Alpha Abe's mother slumped in her chair.  "Impossible..."  she murmured, "Alice isn't that sort of person..."  Watching her collapse, I felt not a ripple of emotion.  I spoke softly, "Wasn't your family's reputation always your greatest concern?"  She snapped her head up, fear in her eyes.  "Well then," I continued, "guess what? If these recordings were released, do you think your family's reputation would survive?"  "You..." she trembled, pointing at me, "What do you want?"  I rose to my feet, towering over her. "I want you to lose everything."  "Just as you took everything from me."  She suddenly dropped to her knees: "Please, spare Alpha Abe..."  I watched her coldly. "When you watched me lose my child, why didn't you think to beg your dear son?"  "I..." Tears fell from her eyes.  At that moment, the ward door swung open.  Alpha Abe stood in the doorway, his face ashen. "Mother, how could you kneel before her?"  He strode in, reaching to help his mother up.  But Abe Mother evaded his hand: "Alpha Abe, those things... are they all true?"  Alpha Abe's expression froze.  "You really..."  Her voice trembled with tears. "Did you really... kill your own child for Alice's sake?"  "Mother, I..."  "Enough!" She staggered to her feet. "I disown you as my son!"  She staggered out of the ward. Alpha tried to follow, but I held him back.  "My dear Alpha Abe," I murmured softly, "the game has only just begun."  He fixed me with a piercing stare. "What exactly do you want?"  I smiled. "I want to watch you lose everything, bit by bit."  "Just as you did to me."  His hands clenched into fists. "You'll regret this."  "Oh, really?" I walked to the window. "Then let's see who ends up regretting it."  He slammed the door behind him. I picked up my phone and sent Audrey a message:  "Ready?"  "The third wave of revelations can begin."  Putting my phone down, I looked at my reflection in the mirror.  My eyes were clear, a smile playing on my lips.  This time, you shall pay the price.  Every betrayal shall be repaid in blood.
