Legend of the Shadow Wolf

Chapter Five

Everyone was having fun, music played, there were games set up for the kids and there were small groups of people chatting and having a good time. I made sure to go around and say hi to everyone, my friends and I danced to the music and sat by the bonfire Alpha had started. As the night grew on, the party started to grow small as we were coming to the end of the festivities. Thankfully it wasn’t a huge party, as much as Luna wanted to go all out, she was respectful to the fact that I don’t do big parties. I am so thankful for what she did for me though, I couldn’t have asked for a better life given the circumstances. After everyone left, I helped with cleaning up and Damien helped me put my gifts in my room before sitting on my bed.

“You ready to go out for a little run with Fang and I tonight?” He asked sheepishly. “Yes, Kali has been bugging me half the night to go stretch her legs,” I replied with a chuckle. He laughed a bit, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand, “Alright you get changed and I’ll meet you out front. Oh, you looked beautiful tonight, Lay.” I gave him a smile and nodded, thanking him as he closed my door, leaving me to change. I stripped out of my dress and heels and threw on some leggings and a tank top with a pair of tennis shoes.

I decided to throw my hair up in a ponytail and headed out to meet Damien. He was leaning against the wall when I got outside, looking at me with a smile as I walked up to him. “You ready, birthday girl?” Damien asked. “Lead the way,” I replied with a smile. He started off towards the forest line as I followed, quickening my pace along the way. Damien and I love a little friendly competition between the two of us so it’s only natural that he started to jog ahead, trying to get some distance between us.

Someone wants a race Kali said amused.

Haha let’s show him who’s faster I said with a smirk.

I then broke out into a sprint, picking up speed and catching Damien off guard as I raced past him into the trees. We lead him towards the small clearing Kali and I have been using for training. I’d slow down a bit, giving him the idea that he was catching up then speed up again, making him huff slightly frustrated. He was able to pass me a couple times but I caught up.

Let’s lose him for a minute, take it up in the trees and ambush him from above Kali suggested vindictively.

Oh this is going to be too much fun I grinned at the evil idea.

Kali then lent me some of her speed and we quickly lost Damien, veering off the path we were on and hiked it up the closest tree off the side. Sticking to the shadows, I leaped from branch to branch, shifting my weight up and imagining myself becoming one with the shadows. We were almost to the clearing, staying close to where Damien was at when I start to feel tingling on my hands and back. It disappeared as quickly as it came so I shook off the feeling and it goes away then I narrow my eyes and get ready to leap as soon as Damien made it to the clearing.

He stops a little way into the open space and looks around a little, searching for me. I leap from the tree branch closest behind him and land directly on his back, crushing him to the ground before he had a chance to make out what happened. “What the hell?!” He shouts, gasping for air. “Haha I bet you weren’t expecting that now were you?” I said smugly, still pinning him to the ground. “F**k Layla, you scared the absolute sh*t out of me!” He said, trying to look up at me. I jump off and extend my hand to him as he rolls over and takes it, standing up and then punches me in the arm.

“You came out of the trees like a damn vampire monkey,” he laughs, still trying to process what just happened. “Haha well thank you. Kali and I have been practicing the last few days. Focused on our stealth for the last part of the competition. You should see Kali doing it, she was way better than me at first,” I said as I can feel her smile proudly in my mind. “Haha alright miss ninja, is Kali ready to show herself now? Fang is impatient to see our sister wolf,” He asked, looking slightly nervous. “She has been ready. Turn around so I can change.” I laughed, turning him around. I’m not generally shy about being naked, it’s natural for us to be naked around each other before and after shifting but Kali wants to surprise him. She has been wanting to show herself to Damien and meet Fang but she knew we had wait, even though we both didn’t know why.

I stripped my clothes off and relinquish control over to Kali and we start to shift. When you shift for the first time, it hurts like hell but once you shift over and over, it’s fast and painless, it becomes just like breathing. Once we are done shifting, Kali reaches forward and nudges Damien’s arm to turn around. He turns and gasps, he has never seen any wolf as big as Kali before. “Damn, you’re so big! How are you taller than Fang? Wow, this is amazing, Kali you have the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen.” He said, awestruck and amazed by how Kali looks. He puts his hand out to pet her and she nudges his hand with her head, closing her eyes as he runs his hand through the side of her face. He ran his hand through her soft fur on her side, take note of how strong her legs look and went back to look at her face.

“Are you ready to meet Fang, Kali?” He asked her and she licks his face in response. He laughs as he changes and shifts into his big Grey and black wolf. He looks at Kali with his big silver and blue eyes, nuzzling Kali’s face gently. Since Fang is an alpha wolf, he is taller than everyone else but he is a few inches smaller than Kali. He noticed the size difference and huffed a little. Fang circled around her, sniffing her as he took all of her in. Kali went to take a step towards him to do the same when she suddenly felt something behind her. The tingling feeling I felt before comes back and starts to spread from her tail to her head rapidly, the clearing darkened as Fang’s eyes widened and he whines, confused at what is going on. The tingling intensifies and starts to feel like something is wrapping around our body, squeezing and suffocating us. Damien shifts back, throwing some loose shorts on and starts running towards us as Kali falls to the ground, unable to stand anymore.

She starts to whine and whimper as a shooting pain courses through her body, starting from her tail to her head. She looses focus and her eyesight starts to get hazy and she barely saw Damien run towards her only to get shot back by something invisible. Before she can process what happened, the pain becomes so intense that Kali can’t hold her form any longer and we shift back to our human form. I bite my lip hard, drawing blood to keep from screaming but the pain intensifies even more. Everything around me was pitch black and I feel the wind start blowing insanely hard, whipping my hair around vigorously as if I was trapped inside a tornado. I wrap my arms around my torso and sit in almost a fetal position, screaming as the wind thrashes my body.

The pain begins to lessen and the wind starts to slow down, I shakily try to stand up, looking around to try to see through the blackness. It feels as if I’m stuck inside a wind tunnel and someone turned all the lights off. As soon as I stand up, my arms are flung out to the sides and something pierces straight into my chest throwing me backwards onto the ground, knocking all of the air out of my body before I could scream. I vaguely recall hearing shouting before I lose consciousness. I’m plunged deep into a dark abyss, my body feels numb and weightless. Only thing I can feel is the tingling sensation that is soon replaced with a soft wisp feeling of smoke that laps at my skin, making its way from my legs and arms.

It begins to wrap around my body, leaving no spot untouched as it’s absorbed into my skin. I try to reach out to Kali but I can’t feel anything, it’s like my soul is disconnected from my body and I’m floating in a sea of nothing but darkness. Nothing exists, did it ever? Am I dead? This isn’t what I imagined death would feel like. Was I ever alive? Nothing makes sense, nothing but dark and numbness. I let go of all that is and all that never was and begin to sink deeper into the black hole I’ve been sucked into.
