Chapter 10Fran ducked through the medicine lodge’s low entrance. She stopped, blinded by the darkness when Willie dropped the hide curtain across the doorway behind her. A bit of light came from the smoke hole high above, enough for her to find her way to her place, once her eyes adjusted. She knew she must go to a spot near the back, beyond the unlit fire. Once there, she stood, uncertain what to do next. Soon, the eldest woman of the village crept in and lit the fire. From a small basket, she took a pinch of corn pollen and sprinkled it over Fran’s head. Without a word, she showed Fran how to fold her legs and sit, directly opposite the doorway, with the fire before her.
