Chapter 2: The Gauntlet of Cedar Ridge

580 Words
Jasper's heart pounded in his chest as he entered the classroom on his first day at Cedar Ridge College. The voices and laughter around him felt like a cacophony. He took his seat and clutched his books to his chest, praying he could just blend into the background. As Xander taunted Jasper from afar, the malicious laughter of his cronies filled the air. Suddenly, Xander’s expression turned even more sinister, and he strode toward Jasper like a predator closing in on its prey. “What’s the matter, Four-Eyes? Cat got your tongue?” Xander sneered, looking Jasper up and down with disdain. “You stick out like a sore thumb. What's with the outfit? Thrift shop special?” Jasper’s face turned red, and his hands were trembling. “I-I...th-they’re c-clothes,” he stuttered. Xander leaned in, his breath hot on Jasper's face. “You’re nothing,” he whispered. Just then, the door swung open, and a voice floated in, “Hey, is this room 210?” It was Elara. Unbeknownst to her, she had interrupted Xander’s tormenting. As she made her way in, one of Xander’s cronies exclaimed, “Man, look! It’s Elara, the campus goddess!” Elara had caught snippets of Xander's taunts. Her heart went out to the new kid. Rick, seeing Elara, shot up from his seat. “Make way, gentlemen,” he said with a wink. With a suave smile, Rick approached Elara. “The loveliest flower in the garden! How about joining me for lunch, beautiful?” Elara’s eyes narrowed. “I’d rather eat with the campus squirrels, thanks,” she retorted, and the classroom erupted with gasps and giggles. Rick retreated, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Xander, observing all this, thought to himself, She’s feisty. She’ll be mine, though. The door swung open again, and this time it was Professor Harold striding in. With an imposing figure, his mere presence commanded attention. His dark suit was crisp, his tie knotted perfectly, and his glasses perched at the edge of his nose. “Class, settle down!” he said firmly. His deep voice resonated through the room. “Today, we have a new student among us. Jasper, please come up front and introduce yourself,” Professor Harold beckoned him with a gesture. Jasper timidly walked up to the front of the room, clutching his books. He gave a brief, stuttering introduction, and the class murmured. “Thank you, Jasper. Please, find your seat,” said Professor Harold. Once Jasper was seated, Professor Harold began his lecture. “Today, we’ll discuss business strategies,” he stated, writing the topic on the board. “Success in business often requires innovation and adaptation.” He then presented a complex business scenario involving a struggling start-up company. Jasper hesitantly raised his hand to answer. “Jasper, please,” Professor Harold said, encouraging him to speak up. In a quiet, stuttering voice, Jasper began. “I-I would suggest, um, pivoting the b-business model to, uh, focus on emerging markets and, um, utilizing social media for low-cost marketing.” There was a moment of silence before the class erupted in applause. Elara was genuinely impressed. She looked at Jasper with newfound interest. Xander, seeing Jasper getting positive attention, shouted, “Yeah, if only he could pivot his wardrobe!” The class laughed, but the bell rang signaling lunch break, cutting the moment short. As students filed out, Jasper’s mind was a whirlwind. The daunting gauntlet of Cedar Ridge had just begun.
