Hannah POV
When Xander heard Charlie snicker, he turned to me. Marcus had joined the conversation and quietly steered Charlie away. I watched him give her a look that said, "You know better." Why do adults do this to us? Charlie is the only adult who treats me like a normal person. Everyone else pussyfoots around me.
Xander pinched the bridge of his nose, "Tell ya what? Ask your mom for her opinion. I don't want to get on her bad side; you watched her take out Mortimer. I would be a fool to piss her off."
His words made me hesitate, Mom did become a slight badass by turning into a vampire. She probably could put both John and Xander into the ground with her hands tied behind her back with those new powers. However, I was still her only child, and I knew how to get under her skin. "I will tell her what I think."
I went to find Mom. I found her near her bedroom wearing a robe. John was standing behind her whispering in her ear. Thank god he had pants on. I have seen that man's bare ass more times than I can count in the short time we have been around each other. "Hey, Mom. Question."
Her attention turned to me. Her red hair was curled around her face in a wild way that did not leave any imagination as to what she and John had been up to. Gross. Maybe with her relaxed, I can get her to agree to this club thing easier. "What's up, baby?" She asked.
"Charlie and I were talking about checking out a club over the weekend-" I started but was very rudely interrupted.
"No."
My eyes narrowed, and I felt that tinge of anger in my chest. "You could at least let me talk before interrupting me."
"No."
I crossed my arms and watched John sit on the bed to monitor our conversation. "For real? You aren't even going to let me talk? It's an immediate no."
"Correct."
"UGH! I swear you are infuriating. Ok, fine then. I won't hang out with a responsible adult. I will just go out with my classmates to the random party I was invited to this weekend."
"That is not any better," Mom's left eye began to twitch, indicating I was nearing her anger tipping point.
"No, you're so right. Being with an adult who you trust in a club where you legally cannot drink and there are employees to verify it will not happen, is so much worse than hanging with a bunch of horny teenagers around a campfire in the middle of a cornfield. Who knows what will be in those drinks and food? I'll probably get roofied. But it's better than some old club."
Mom's face got red, yep, I hit the buttons. My face was probably getting red also.
"How about you just do what normal kids do and stick around your friends in a sleepover, gossiping and eating popcorn?" Mom retaliated.
My jaw dropped. "Is this the 80s? Oh my god, do you think we can find a rotary phone to prank call the boys who are "like soooo cute.?" I pulled out a Malibu impersonation. I liked the stupid movies from her childhood. They made me laugh at the ridiculous things teens were worried about back in those days.
Her eyes narrowed on me, "You are not going to a club. Let me guess, you want to go to the shifter club? Where Charlie nearly died from alcohol and drug overdose?"
I scrunched my nose, this being the first I had heard of the extreme Charlie had gotten herself into. "No, but if it were a human club. I could get in at 17. They put those things on your wrist to make sure you don't drink. How is a shifter club any different?" I felt my face get red. She was truly being unreasonable.
"I don't even want you at a human club! The people there cannot be trusted!" There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. The true reason is that my mother wants me to stay home and crochet by the fireplace.
"Who do I need to worry about, Mom?" I knew exactly what she was going to say.
"Everyone!" Her yell shook the walls. Impressive, being a vampire made her anger do fun things to the building. If I hadn't been as angry at her inability to see reason, I would be impressed at the fact that she could shake walls that were soundproofed.
"Why would I be worried, Mom? Didn't you get rid of the threat? Remember when you went all Dragon Ball Z on the bad guy?"
Mom was across the room in a heartbeat. Her hands gripped tightly to my biceps. "You are still not safe! I could still lose you!"
Her grip hurt. "How am I not safe?"
Mom's grip loosened slightly as she sighed, "Hannah, I never know if someone like your bio dad will try to come back into your life. The whole fiasco with Mortimer just amplified my fears for you."
My mom's PTSD is causing this argument. Great, she won't see reason easily. For anyone who has not lived it, mental illness is a b***h. It ruins not only the person who is diagnosed's life, but also the family of that person. We are all impacted. My bio dad did some crappy things to my mom. I have never gotten her to tell me what exactly went down, but for her to be afraid of her own shadow for as many years as she was, I know it had to be bad. "Mom, I agree that the Mortimer thing was scary. You saved me from that. Just like you protected me from the bio dad that I never wanted to meet. At some point, Mom, you have to know that you also taught me how to protect myself. I am not exactly worried about being glamored or whatever he did to my head was called. My bio dad has nothing on that freak." I felt Mom begin to relax at my words. I knew I was making sense. "Besides, if you just let me turn, I could protect myself."
As Mom stiffened, I knew I pushed too far. I was so close to getting her to relax about the club, but I had to needle the turning into a supernatural with her. Honestly, of everything we have been through we haven't talked about it much, but I do know she does not want me to turn into anything other than a human.
"Not a chance, child."
"Ah, come on, Mom! You are all supers, and I am just a lowly human. It isn't like I fit in with the other kids at school anyway. Why can't I fit in here, too?" Mom's eyes narrowed on me. I hadn't been fully forthcoming about how I was treated at school. The last thing I ever wanted her to do was blame herself for the kids tormenting me about my family's past.
"Do you realize what it takes to turn? I had to die, literally die. I am not killing my own child."
"So let me go beast mode like Xander or John."
Mom pinched her nose before turning to her mates. Xander had joined John on the bed and were both just watching our argument. "Xander, John, explained to us what it takes to be turned. Include the risks, please."
I watched John turn to Xander and say something to him about being the Alpha. That did not bode well.
"Well, depending on the creature, it starts with a bite." Xander started.
"Like how you both bit mom on her neck?" I pointed at their mate marks.
"No, it is a different bite. There is a ritual on the full moon. You'll go into a fever and meet with the moon goddess. If she deems you worthy, you'll get your beast. If she doesn't, you die."
My heart sunk below my stomach. OK, that was a bit more intense than I expected. "How often do people die?" I asked.
"50/50" John stated staring at me.
I bit the inside of my cheek thinking about that, "So vampire is less tricky?"
Xander barked out, "Goddess no. Vampire has its own issues and risks. The biggest risk is that your sire doesn't refill your blood quickly enough and you become brain dead. Humans refer to those as zombies. We keep those far away from civilization."
Mom's horrified gasp caught me off guard. "Were you going to tell me this before turning me?" Her look was getting wild.
"Of course, Kitten. We do not hide anything from you. It isn't like we were given a ton of time to discuss your turning before Mortimer struck." John appeased my mom.
Mom sighed then turned to me. "18 for turning if it's something you want. Clubbing, you do not leave Charlies sight."
I couldn't stop the squeal that left my mouth. I hugged mom tightly and ran out of the room to look for Charlie. How did hearing she could have become a zombie help my cause? I didn't want to think about it too much, she literally caved.
