The healer frowned. “Victor’s overworked his heart. It could relapse. Tonight’s critical—someone needs to stay with him. Figure it out.” Victor’s friends glanced at each other, then at me. These spoiled pack heirs wouldn’t lift a finger for grunt work. I sighed. “I’ll stay tonight. Find someone to rotate with me.” I followed the gurney to his room, sitting by his bed, half-dazed, watching his unconscious form. In the dead of night, he stirred, lips moving faintly. I leaned in. He was whispering Ivy’s name, soft and tender, over and over. Outside, his friend’s voice drifted in. “I’ve called Ivy dozens of times.
