Chapter 1

"Athena!" My mom called and I turned to her. She ran over with tears in her eyes. "You look so beautiful in that dress." The black form-fitting number was covered in lace, like a gothic wedding dress. It was the traditional thing to wear for a mating ceremony. I still couldn't believe I was here. At 24 years old. My mother had insisted on this though. A human wedding was to follow. I was only half-demon. Which means I got only some of the perks and most of the drawbacks. My future mate was also a half-demon. Our parents had set us up. We had little choice in the matter. Half-demons couldn't be with humans. We wouldn't be able to have kids with them. Plus, we could be dangerous to them. Not me. I was a half succubus, but I couldn't kill someone like my mother could. I just had a high s*x drive and I had to suffer through heats. They seemed to come at random, but my mother said they were triggered by s****l compatibility. That once I had a mate I would only react to him. That's why I had agreed to this. I wanted it to all stop. Even if I didn't love this man, it was the only way to be free. I was tired of being trapped away from humans. I hadn't even seen the guest list for this event. I knew she had invited several demons, but it didn't really matter. It was a simple thing. I would pledge my soul to that man and he would mark me. The hard part is what would follow. Being claimed would likely trigger my heat. I was not looking forward to sleeping with a man I didn't know. Especially if he was going to be my husband. I was not a virgin, of course. Once I came of age, I had gone into heat and that had vanished. That's the day my mother pulled me out of school when she realized I had inherited her traits. "Smile. This is what you wanted, right? You are the first half succubus in almost two centuries to inherit a heat. You are special." I fought not to scoff. It's not like it mattered. I didn't want this. I sighed softly. "We shouldn't be late," I said and she smiled. "No, we should not keep your new mate waiting." She took my hand gently and led me towards the big room. The place was huge. Apparently, it was the mansion of a well-known demon family that my mother knew. I had never met any of her demon friends before. Once or twice I had seen them in passing though. I remembered briefly what she had said about the man who lived here. He was an incubus who had many wives and no mates. He had several children all around my age from all of his wives. They were apparently powerful and were a wide range of demon. She had gushed for hours about his three youngest sons. They were all 26. The only ones who had not found a mate yet. They did a lot together and were the closest of the siblings. They were all born on the same day and, according to my mother, since they shared a father, it meant they had a connection. Which explained why they were so close. I didn't quite get it, but it didn't matter. I didn't want anything to do with full demons besides my own mother. They seemed cruel. "Oh, I heard the boys aren't going to be here. It's a shame I wanted you to be able to see their handsome faces before you got mated." "Mom. It's fine." She looked at me with a soft frown. Her eyes shifted to a bright pink briefly as she held back her annoyance before returning to the brown that hid her true eye color. Her black hair had been passed to me, but my eyes had never been pink. They only changed when I went into heat. Other than that, they were a light honey brown like my father's were. "I suppose you are right. You might see them at the after-party. They don't often pass up a party. Once you and your mate are finished, that is." She nudged me and I cringed internally. I didn't want to think about that right now, or I might back out of this whole thing. "Now go and meet your man." She gave me a soft push as she opened the door. Everyone was talking casually and not sitting. They were all drinking. That's why they had come in the first place. I looked to the center at the small altar. It was empty for now, but I stepped forward with a small sigh and took my place next to it. A man began to step forward, and before I could even smile at the man who would soon be my mate, the doors flew open again. Three guys walked in, and the whole room turned to them. They were different, and yet I could tell they were brothers. They weren't even bothering to hide their demon eye colors either and each one was different. The one on the right had the blood-red eyes of a rage demon and sandy blonde hair. He was the tallest of the group and his face was cold and emotionless. The middle man had the orange eyes of a fire demon and bright blonde hair. He had soft, kind eyes and a soft smile. Lastly, the one on the left had the bright neon green eyes of an envy demon and light brown hair. He was the shortest of the group and wore a cheeky smile. "Boys!" A deep voice boomed through the room and I flinched. "That was quite rude." A tall man walked over. His eyes shifted pink for a moment as he glared at his sons. "What?! Why?!" The rage demon snapped. "This is our home. We can come and go as we please." His father glared daggers at him and he cowered back. "I'm sorry father. I'm on edge." "You interrupted the ceremony. Now get a drink and be quiet and respectful." That's when the boys looked towards me and each of their eyes locked with mine. I felt a ripple through my being. I had to grab the altar not to collapse to my knees. There was a murmur through the crowd as they approached me. What did they want? How were they making me react this way? They looked at each other and nodded softly. Each one reached out and touched me softly. I felt my body react strongly, and my heat flared up inside me. This time I did collapse to the floor. "BOYS!" Their father yelled, but they ignored him as the rage demon who looked to be the leader crouched in front of me. "Are you the one to be mated today?" I nodded to him, and he looked at his brothers. The green eyes of the envy demon flashed in anger. "No. We can't allow it." He growled deeply and the other two nodded. They all turned to their father. "We want her." The fire demon spoke in a soft voice. Their father's mouth dropped open slightly. "Boys, if you want to find a girl, I offered to help. Don't act like children." "No!" The envy demon growled loudly. "We want her as our mate." The room went silent, and I felt like my whole world shattered. What did they just say?
