A hand slapped hard against my face. Tabitha, I crunched on my teeth. But I couldn’t open my eyes. I was weak. Too weak. I didn’t like this feeling. I shouldn’t. I didn’t want to die. I’d jinxed myself. Then fingers pried my eyes open and a light shone brightly into them. I could hear voices but so far away. As if I was lying in a bath of water. Arms lifted me. I felt the coldness of the floor against my back. Water on my face. I still didn’t react. This was bad. Real bad. I didn’t know if it was day or night. How many days had passed?
