Chapter 6: Rain and Fire

1191 Words
The clatter of silverware and soft hum of the restaurant felt distant, muffled by the rain striking hard against the windows. The world outside was drowning, yet inside their corner table, the storm had only just begun. Aliyana exhaled slowly, steadying herself. Her fingers brushed over the edge of the envelope in her lap. Her chest rose and fell, her heart pounding like a prisoner against its cage. She placed it on the table. Neat. Deliberate. Final. Zayd's hazel eyes flickered toward it, then back to her. The smirk never wavered. "I'm here to discuss something with you," she said, her voice calm, but the tremor in her breath betrayed her. He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table, resting his chin lightly against his clasped hands. A predator disguised in patience. "I'm listening." Aliyana drew in a sharp breath. She pushed the envelope across the polished wood until it sat before him. For a moment, she didn't dare blink. Zayd picked it up without a word, his movements smooth, unhurried. He slipped the papers free, scanned the words — and then, slowly, the fire ignited in his eyes. When he lifted his gaze to her, it was like staring into the heart of a blaze. "Yeah," she said, forcing the word out through a tight throat. Her voice was firm, though every muscle in her body threatened to collapse. "Zayd, sign it. I want a divorce." Silence fell heavy between them, thicker than the storm outside. The waiter passed, the lights flickered against the glass, but in their world, time stopped. Zayd's lips curved into the faintest smile. He slid the papers back into the envelope with the same calmness he'd opened them. He didn't even look at the signatures. Didn't look at the lines. Finally, he spoke. His voice was silk over steel. "Why so much effort?" He tilted his head, smirk deepening, as if her attempt amused him. "You know you're mine, Aliyana." The words sank into her chest, heavier than chains. Her breath caught. Her fingers curled against her lap, nails digging into her skin. She wanted to scream, to tell him he was wrong. But his gaze pinned her in place, pulling her deeper, unraveling every shield she thought she'd built. And in that moment, she realized something chilling— He would never let her go. "Look, Zayd…" Aliyana's voice wavered, but she forced her chin up, meeting his burning eyes. "We can't be together." Zayd leaned back casually in his chair, as though her words were nothing more than background noise to the rain hammering the windows. He smirked. "Can't?" His tone was soft, dangerously soft. "We are together, Aliyana. And soon… your father will place your hand in mine." Her chest tightened. Panic surged through her veins. "Don't bring my father between us!" she snapped, the words sharp, trembling with anger. The smirk sharpened, his eyes narrowing with lethal delight. "So… finally, your weakness shows." Aliyana's heartbeat thundered in her chest. No. No. He's a beast. Every instinct screamed to run, but his gaze chained her to that chair. "You cheated my father, Zayd," she whispered, her amber eyes glistening with fury. "You lied to him. You betrayed his trust." For the first time, Zayd's smirk broke into a laugh — low, dark, echoing with mockery. He leaned forward, elbows pressing against the table, his face inches from hers. "Pfftt…" His chuckle sent a chill crawling down her spine. "Didn't you give me a name, wife?" His hazel eyes glowed with a wicked fire. "Monster." His voice dropped to a whisper, his lips curling cruelly. "So tell me… what exactly are you expecting from a monster?" "What do you want, Zayd?" Aliyana's voice cracked under the weight of his gaze. "You." The word tore out of him like an oath, raw and possessive. His eyes blazed as if nothing else in the world mattered. "I… I can't give you me." Her whisper trembled, desperate, but resolute. Zayd rose from his chair with predatory calm, each step deliberate, until the space between them disappeared. The air thickened, her breath caught in her throat. In one swift motion, he gripped the back of her neck, pulling her closer until his breath ghosted across her skin. Her pulse pounded wildly. "Listen, Aliyana," he growled, voice low, dangerous. "You're already mine. And if you think you can run… or hide… that's nothing more than a pretty little fantasy." He paused, his lips grazing the shell of her ear, sending a violent shiver down her spine. "If you become death…" His voice was a blade, cutting slow. "…I'll burn you to ashes. And I'll eat them." Aliyana's heart nearly stopped, fear and fury warring inside her. Then his lips hovered just above hers — close enough to taste her trembling breath. His whisper branded her soul: "Because you… are mine." Aliyana shoved him with all her strength, her chair crashing to the floor as she scrambled to her feet. Without looking back, she ran. Zayd's smirk stretched into a sharp, feral grin. The sound of his low laugh followed her like a shadow. "Run, little rabbit… run." Her chest was heaving when she reached the restaurant's exit. She pressed her palm against the glass door, forcing her breath to steady. Then, with a surge of defiance, she pushed it open. The night air hit her — cold, wet, heavy with rain. And then— CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! Gunfire shattered the silence. Aliyana froze, eyes widening as the scene unfolded in a blur. Three black cars screeched to a halt across the street, windows rolling down in unison. Dark-suited men leaned out, rifles raised, the muzzles flashing as a hail of bullets sprayed toward her. Her heart lurched into her throat. "GET HER IN THE CAR!" one of her guards bellowed, rushing forward. Chaos erupted. Her men surged around her, shields of flesh and steel, ushering her into the armored car waiting by the curb. Glass shattered, sparks flew, the air thick with gunpowder and rain. And then— Zayd burst through the doorway behind her. His coat was half-open, his hair damp with the storm, eyes burning with lethal rage. In one motion, he pulled his gun from its holster, firing into the line of black cars with deadly precision. Each shot was sharp, controlled, merciless. "MOVE HER OUT! NOW!" he roared, voice slicing through the chaos like thunder. Aliyana's men obeyed instantly, rushing her into the bulletproof car, shielding her with their bodies as the enemy fire intensified. Zayd stepped into the open, unfazed by the bullets whistling past him. He fired again and again, the rain streaking down his face, the street exploding with violence around him. With a sharp gesture, he signaled two of his own men. "Follow her. Make sure she gets home safe. Nothing touches her." The two nodded and sprinted into cars of their own, engines roaring to life. Aliyana's car sped away into the storm, her pulse hammering in her ears, Zayd's silhouette still burning in her mind—standing tall in the fire and rain, a devil guarding his prey.
