Chapter 1

351 Words
May, 1943, Dear Journal,  I can't write for long knowing any minute now the enemies boats arrive to shore. For I will have to go into hiding so I don't end up being a prisoner. I write this in all honesty, I am scared. It hasn't been 2 weeks before I was forced to marry a man I don't love. While my father is defending for our people against the allies. I have deceived my family in the worst possible way. I'm sorry father for I your beloved Oldest daughter have fallen in love with the enemy behind the gate. My name is Zena. Just Zena. I am 19 years old. There was once a time my life wasn't entangled in such drama. A time where I had what seemed like a normal family. Normal life, where I had dreams of leaving the Island and traveling somewhere far. Somewhere exotic. Where I would fall i love. Get married. Have a family. Maybe during this lifetime I was destined for something great. Not a lifetime of pain and constant heartbreak. Or maybe that was actually the life I was destined for. This is my story. But if i'm going to tell it right, I have to start from the beginning.  February 1943 It was another beautiful day . I can hear the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. Inhaling that scent of salty sea water. I did the usual morning routes before going about my day. The neighborhood children all gathered around the field laughing and playing. I took the longer route to school that day. I wanted to enjoy the view of the palm trees swaying as the wind blew. Marcella my best friend at the time came across my path and as usual she was nose down in a book. Marcella was such a happy person. She was so humble and often times naive but she was kind hearted and very religious. Tomorrow will be a different day but I have a feeling that tomorrow will be the last good day in paradise. I pray that this feeling is wrong.
